✨Somi’s Birth Story ✨

At 41 weeks pregnant, I was getting a little uncomfortable, soaking in all my last few days of pregnancy, and getting nervous that this baby wasn’t coming out by 42 weeks. I was cleaning everyday to make sure the house was ready, stretching, walking, and just waiting to meet our first baby. So at 41 weeks exactly, when the ultra sound tech told me that my amniotic fluid was low and that I should go to the hospital immediately I was in shock. I had known since I was about 15 that I wanted my baby to be born in the comfort of my own home, and the prospect of laboring in hospital really deflated me. But of course the health of my baby was our first priority, so we got some more information from the midwives and the ultra sound tech, prayed about it, got my first and only membrane sweep done, and really listened to our intuition. I felt that this baby was coming within the next day and that she wasn’t in distress so we landed on the decision to go home to see if labor would start that night and if not we would go to the hospital the next day to get my fluid retested. My husband and I felt so at peace with this decision, we went home, had a good meal, and then just snuggled up in bed for the rest of the night watching one of my favorite shows. It was a rainy evening, and at the beginning of my pregnancy I had said how I would love if it were raining while I was giving birth. Everything felt right. Come 1am, I woke up to cramping and I knew immediately that they were contractions, at first I tried to go back to sleep since I knew labor could be long, but after about 10 minutes I had to get up. I went and sat on the toilet for about an hour before waking my husband, I was loosely timing the contractions in my head and they felt as though they were lasting for about a minute with 5 minutes in between.

The rest of the story is in the comments 💗

Let’s talk birth support. We always recommend having midwives and doulas present during the birth because we can offer practical help, and as much emotional support as possible. Think position changes, monitoring, advocating, encouraging. But having someone like a loving partner available just to be there for you is truly irreplaceable. What we want during birth is calm grounded energy and oxytocin flow. There are probably few people who can provide that for you. Our advice: find that person and have them be your rock at your birth. We love you and we support your birth partners to be as involved as possible!
