🚨 Killing mold isn’t the same thing as removing it.
Bleach it. Spray it. KILZ over it. If you can’t see it anymore, the problem is solved…right?
Not quite.
Proper mold remediation is built around SOURCE REMOVAL—physically removing fungal growth and contaminated material while also correcting the moisture problem that allowed it to grow.
In our newest blog, we break down:
👉 Why “dead” mold still needs to be removed
👉 Why painting over visible growth isn’t remediation
👉 Where chemicals do fit into the process
👉 What proper source removal should actually look like
Before you ask, “What kills mold?” ask a better question:
“How are you going to REMOVE it?”

🚨 Before hiring a mold remediator, ask THIS question:
“How are you physically removing the mold?”
Then listen carefully to the answer.
If the entire plan is to:
❌ Spray it
❌ Fog it
❌ “Treat” it
❌ Paint or encapsulate over it
…ask another question:
“What happens to the actual fungal material?”
Because killing, treating, or covering mold does not automatically remove the spores, hyphae, fungal fragments, and other material from the building.
Proper remediation should focus on SOURCE REMOVAL.
Depending on the material, that may mean removing contaminated drywall or insulation, mechanically cleaning structural wood, HEPA vacuuming, detailed cleaning, or using other appropriate physical-removal methods.
Do chemicals and encapsulants sometimes have a place? Absolutely.
But they shouldn't be used as a shortcut around removing fungal growth when source removal is possible.
And don't forget the other half of the equation: the moisture problem that allowed the mold to grow must be corrected, too.
So before signing that remediation contract, ask:
🔎 How are you physically removing the mold?
If the answer only explains how they're going to kill it or cover it—keep asking questions.
Treatment isn't the same as removal.

🪵 Why do we SAND moldy wood instead of just spraying it?
Because proper mold remediation is about REMOVAL—not just treatment.
When mold colonizes framing lumber, fungal growth isn't necessarily just loose spores sitting on top of the wood. Hyphae can grow along and into the accessible surface of the material.
Simply spraying the wood may discolor or inactivate some of that growth—but the fungal material is still there.
👉 That's where mechanical cleaning comes in.
Sanding physically removes the affected surface layer of wood, taking fungal growth with it and exposing clean, sound substrate underneath.
But there's an important second half to the process:
💨 Sanding creates dust and can release fungal particles into the air.
That's why proper containment, HEPA-filtered air control, and HEPA vacuuming are so important. HEPA vacuuming captures the fine wood dust, spores, hyphal fragments, and other particulate generated during the cleaning process rather than allowing it to settle throughout the environment.
The basic concept is simple:
SAND → REMOVE the colonized surface
HEPA VACUUM → REMOVE the resulting particulate
DETAIL CLEAN → REMOVE what remains
And, of course, none of this matters long-term if the moisture source that allowed the mold to grow isn't corrected.
🧪 Spraying isn't source removal.
🪵 Physical removal is.

🧽 Bleach makes mold disappear… so why isn’t it actually gone?
Here’s the catch: "disappearing" and being removed are two very different things.
Bleach is a powerful oxidizer. It can break down or alter the pigments that give mold its visible color. So that black, green, or brown growth may suddenly become much lighter—or appear to disappear completely.
Bleach may also inactivate some fungal organisms under the right conditions.
But what it DOESN’T do is magically remove the fungal material from the surface.
Spores, hyphae, fungal fragments, and other cellular material can remain behind even when you can no longer see them.
Think about it this way:
👉 Bleached ≠ removed.
👉 Dead ≠ gone.
👉 Invisible ≠ clean.
Proper mold remediation focuses on SOURCE REMOVAL—physically removing fungal growth and contaminated material through methods appropriate for the surface, such as removal of unsalvageable materials or mechanical cleaning of salvageable ones.
Chemicals can have a role in certain remediation situations, but they don't replace physical removal.
So next time someone says, “We sprayed it and the mold disappeared!” ask one more question:
Where did the mold material actually go?
If the answer is nowhere… it wasn't removed.
🏡 The goal isn't dead mold. The goal is removed mold.

Plants aren't a replacement for ventilation, filtration, or good moisture control—but some have demonstrated the ability to take up certain airborne compounds under controlled conditions. Plus, bringing a little nature indoors isn't a bad thing! 🪴
Our top 3:
🌱 Spider Plant — Easy to care for and studied for its ability to take up certain VOCs. Bonus: it's generally considered pet-friendly!
🌱 Snake Plant — Hardy, drought-tolerant, and perfect if you occasionally forget to water—which also means it's easier to avoid chronically wet soil.
🌱 Areca Palm — A beautiful larger plant with lots of leaf surface area. Just be mindful of watering and don't allow the soil to stay constantly saturated.
The key to keeping ANY houseplant mold-friendly?
💧 Don't overwater.
🪴 Provide good drainage.
💨 Give it airflow.
👀 Watch the soil for fungal growth.
Plants don't have to be the enemy of a mold-conscious home. It's all about moisture management.

Moldy soil doesn’t always mean you have to toss your favorite plant!
Houseplants can become a source of indoor mold when soil stays too wet—but with the right maintenance, you can often keep the plant AND address the mold. 🌱
In our newest blog, we walk you through how to replace moldy soil without losing your plant, plus simple tips for watering, drainage, humidity, and preventing mold from coming back.

What's lurking inside your washing machine?
It's not just about mold.
Over time, body oils, sweat, proteins, detergent residue, and other organic material can accumulate inside your washer and contribute to the sticky buildup we call biofilm.
That's one reason we like enzyme-based washer cleaners.
Enzymes help break down organic residues so they can be loosened and flushed from areas you can't easily reach by hand.
But remember our favorite rule:
👉 If you can see it, physically remove it first.
Scrub away visible mold, slime, and buildup. Then use an enzyme-based washer cleaner to help address the harder-to-reach areas inside the machine.
We're not trying to make our washers sterile—we're trying to remove buildup, reduce moisture, and make them less hospitable to microbial growth.
🌱 Education over fear. Prevention over panic.

When was the last time you cleaned your washing machine?
And we don't mean just running a cleaning cycle.
Washers are designed to clean our clothes—but moisture, body oils, detergent residue, lint, and other debris can accumulate in places you may never think to look.
👀 Check these commonly missed areas:
🦠 Top loaders: Remove the agitator if your model allows it and check underneath. Don't forget to wipe underneath the upper lip of the drum!
🦠 Front loaders: Pull back ALL the folds of that rubber gasket. Moisture and debris love to hide there.
🦠 All washers: Remove and clean detergent and fabric-softener dispensers whenever possible.
Then give your washer a chance to DRY. Leave the lid or door open between loads so moisture isn't trapped inside.
Your washing machine cleans everything else in your house.
Sometimes, it needs a little cleaning too. 😉
What does proper mold remediation actually look like?
It’s more than tearing out moldy drywall—or spraying something and calling it done.
A successful remediation should address the entire problem:
1️⃣ Correct the moisture — Fix the condition that allowed mold to grow.
2️⃣ Remove the source — Physically remove colonized materials and properly clean salvageable surfaces.
3️⃣ Clean the environment — Address the spores, fungal fragments, and fine particulate that may have become airborne or settled into dust.
4️⃣ Verify the work — Inspect, check moisture conditions, and perform appropriate post-remediation testing to confirm the job was successful.
Fix it. Remove it. Clean it. Verify it. ✔️
Because remediation shouldn't just make the mold look gone. It should address the conditions, contamination, and environment that allowed the problem to exist in the first place.
