Ack!!!! Last weekend for flowers is Oct 11!!
Just read Green Phoenix Florals latest newsletter (sharing ….because it’s a good one!)
Only 2 weeks left for flowers!!!
Great sorrow……but Miriam’s words spoke to me ….. so I’ll end with shop on , buy now & we’ll see you next season.
Thank you for your continued support !

I recently read an organization’s newsletter that taled about the down side of keeping your options open. Options obviously have their place, but as particular human beings, we need concrete things to latch onto. We can’t survive in mere abstractions. Two examples they gave were home— one specific place that is not all the rest, and marriage— saying “yes” to one person inherently means you say “no” to all the rest.

There’s a lot I could say about how that resonated with me— what it means to be creative, how the perishability of flowers forces you to appreciate them while they are still there, the particularity of the land I grow on and the people I serve, about gratitude for what I have instead of living in a state of longing.

The idea of particularity really emphasized for me the value of seasonality. The word “seasonal,” gets thrown around a lot but I mean more than just the changes in the weather (although that controls so much). I definitely do appreciate all the different micro seasons throughout the year, like the 4ish weeks of peony season, or the yellowness that is September, March and the unique scent it brings as the soil warms.

I’ve also been pondering the seasons of life. As someone with a toddler, I hear people talk all the time about “the season of life” I’m in. I think it’s finally starting to register what that might mean for how I and my family operate. No matter what hard things happen right now, I know there’s plenty I’ll look back on and miss down the road.

In a world where we can pretty much get whatever we want whenever we want it, and be or do anything and everything (so it is said, but I think most of us feel the limits of reality), things lose their unique character. As the newsletter said, “some things are valuable exactly because we cannot simply replace them.”

So, in honor of the beautiful time that is now, the beginning of October and likely a couple weeks away from the frost that ends it all, I’m doing a “last hurrah” giveaway!

In order to enter, simply fill out your name and email on this form, where you can find the details. I will randomly draw a name on October 11. In much less eloquent terms, come get ‘em while they’re good!

Farm Stand Update

On a similar note, I am officially ending the farm stand season that same weekend. That means the last day to purchase from the farm stand will be October 11. That’s just 2 weekends left! Even if we haven’t gotten a killing frost by then, the bulk of my flowers are tired and ready to take their rest (they deserve it).

Looking forward to seeing you at the farm stand for our final flower push this season!

Sometimes I wish people could see what it really means to be a hairstylist.

Because in one week, we can experience an entire lifetime with our clients.

This week, I grieved alongside a widow.
I comforted a friend battling cancer. Tomorrow, I have to say goodbye to a client who has trusted me with her hair, her stories, and pieces of her life for 2 years. (She’s moving!)

And somewhere in between all of that, there were laughs, celebrations, exciting news, hard days, new beginnings, and everything in between.

We are often the first to know.

The pregnancy.
The heartbreak.
The loss.
The promotion.
The divorce.
The new relationship.
The diagnosis.
The engagement.
The things they haven’t told anyone else yet.

We sit across from our clients and listen. We celebrate with them. We cry with them. We hold space for them. Sometimes we know what is happening in their lives before their friends and family do.

And the truth is, we see some of our clients more often than we see the people in our own families.

So when someone looks at what we do and thinks, “It’s just hair,” I understand why they might see it that way.

But I don’t.

I know that sometimes we’re not just doing hair.

We’re a safe place.
We’re a shoulder to cry on.
We’re a sounding board.
We’re a cheerleader.
We’re a friend.
We’re a constant in someone’s life through seasons of change.

And somewhere along the way, our clients become family.

I don’t take that responsibility lightly. Not for one second.

To every person who has sat in my chair, trusted me with your hair, your stories, your tears, your celebrations, and the parts of your life that aren’t always easy to talk about—

Thank you.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your lives. Thank you for trusting me. Thank you for letting me grow alongside you.

I hope you know just how grateful I am.

Because being your hairstylist has never been just a job to me.

It’s a privilege. 🖤
