There’s so much conversation in the small business world about community over competition, women supporting women, being a girl’s girl, supporting local, supporting makers… and I live and believe in ALL of it.

But I’ve also learned that those words mean absolutely nothing without actions behind them and that some people are shady as hell.

Owning my small business has introduced me to some genuinely incredible women and small business owners. It has also taught me some very hard lessons about trust, boundaries, partnerships, and listening to my intuition.

I used to give people the benefit of the doubt long after something started feeling off because I didn’t want drama. I wanted to support other women. I wanted to support local shops. I wanted to believe everyone operated with the same respect I tried to give them.

I don’t do that anymore.

You can support other women, and still have boundaries. You can still be a girl’s girl and still say, “you don’t get access to me or my business anymore.” You can be kind without ignoring disrespect. Protecting your business doesn't make you unsupportive. It makes you a business owner.

You can believe deeply in community over competition and still recognize when someone is fake, full of BS and only in it for themselves.

And you can support small businesses without tolerating behavior you would never accept in any other professional relationship.

Some lessons in business are expensive.

Some are painful.

And apparently some come with a porta potty 🙃🤣

A few industry ICKS that we need to talk about. 👀🚩

As a business owner and someone who's certified in holistic health, the more I've learned over the years about formulation, fragrance safety, IFRA guidelines, labeling and compliance, the more passionate I've become about doing things the RIGHT way.

This isn't about perfection or tearing down other small businesses. It's about an industry that puts products directly on people's skin...and believing that we have a responsibility to know what we're making, the ingredients we're using and the safety guidelines that apply to them and be honest about what we're selling.

Pretty packaging and trendy marketing will never be more important to me than what goes inside the bottle. 🤍

I'll continue choosing high-quality ingredients, ethically sourced organic ingredients, following fragrance safety guidelines, and being transparent about what goes into our products.

Because you deserve to know what you're putting on your skin. Period. 👏🏻
