An additional breast reconstruction option may be on the horizon.
Already available in the Netherlands, autologous fat transfer uses a patient's own fat to rebuild the breast after mastectomy. A Dutch study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found the technique may offer an option for patients who don't want implants or aren't good candidates for flap reconstruction.
While the process can take up to a year to complete, the study found high patient satisfaction, few complications and significant improvements in quality of life.
