This is an excellent book that people interested in fitness might wish to read. It is the story of a uniquely human evolutionary adaptation â walking upright, with an erect spine perpendicular to the ground. The book addresses the origin of walking in the distant evolutionary past, explores the means by which we navigate our way through unfamiliar (and sometimes simulated) terrain, and goes on to talk about how all this made us human.
The earliest australopithecines, dated at about 3.5 million years before present, had tiny brains, about the same size as a modern chimpâs. However, their pelvis and leg structures indicate that they had already embarked on the route to bipedalism, albeit they were not as well adapted as are we. Much earlier still, the genetic mechanisms (the âhoxâ gene) which permit walking were present in the earliest land animals, the tetrapod, which lived a full 380 million years ago. Evolution has âconservedâ this gene across the eons, right down to us.
Walking is a precursor and catalyst for a whole host of other evolutionary adaptations. Once our hands were freed, we developed manual dexterity and modes of behavior that made big brains and â eventually â language selective advantages.
OâMara delves into some detail about the cognitive science aspect navigating, which I found to be fascinating. Specialized brain cells âfireâ in response to physical location. Others light up depending on the direction in which we are heading. The feedback from this mechanism provides us with the confidence to continue our journey; the sense of disorientation and panic that often accompany âgetting lostâ is the result of this feedbackâs abrupt cessation. This navigation mechanism, which OâMara calls our âinternal GPSâ but that other scientists call a âcognitive mapâ is conserved by evolution across many species, from rats to humans. (In the former, it is referred to as the âtheta signalâ).
However, there is more, and here is where it really gets interesting. Some of these cells become active when we are just thinking about moving about, even if we are imaging a simulated (fantasy) landscape that we have never actually seen and, in all likelihood, never will. Other writers have referred to this ability to traverse simulated reality as âcounterfactualâ reasoning, a quality that seems uniquely human. It was this ability that may have led early humans to imagine trips to distant vistas, envisioning benefits or dangers, and modifying their behavior accordingly. (There might be some great orchards across those hills, but a tiger lurking on the trail might make a meal of me!). This is important â humans use knowledge of the future â however imperfect â to modify behavior in the present. This may be another uniquely human characteristic.
On a lighter note, walking is just plain good for us, and it is good fun. I find it very relaxing. It clears the mind and provides a mild to moderate cardio workout.
Finally, walking enables bonding experiences. Walking together, as in a protest march, helps form the glue that gives a group of hitherto strangers a sense of âusâ.
The book comes with my recommendations.

Meet Jamie Argento! Jamie is the newest member of the SyteraYoga teaching team!
Jamie embraces the mantra that yoga is a journey not a destination. She believes that every time we step onto the mat, every time we move through the asanas, every time we breathe we have an opportunity to start anew. As a former Division I athlete, runner, and sports enthusiast, she values the balance and harmony between the physical strength and mindful peace that yoga cultivates. Her classes are soulful and energetic while providing students with opportunities to center and focus internally.
Jamie completed her RYT 200 through Yoga Alliance and is certified by Sytera Yoga in the Nadi Ball method. She loves to explore the many styles of yoga and you will often find her practicing in the studio. She welcomes people of all experiences and levels to join her classes. When not on the mat, you may find Jamie cheering for her college and high school-age children at soccer matches, volunteering in her community, dancing at Zumba classes, and working as a public defender.

Who We Are
SyteraYoga opened on January 1, 2018 with the support of 61 contributors in a Kickstarter campaign. Our vision then and now is to build and support a vibrant yoga community where students and teachers find greater positivity, joy, and health while connecting with others who share our passion for self-care. At SyteraYoga we celebrate the wonderful, whole-person benefits of yoga: confidence, strength, and compassion for your body and mind. We call it âFind Your Shine.â
Born and raised in Austin, TX, Sytera was 19 when she fell from a cliff and broke both bones in her lower right leg. She had to find a way to heal and trust her body again. Yoga was the answer. Since that time, yoga has been her lifeâs work. Now, drawing on more than two decades as a yoga practitioner and teacher, Sytera strives to foster a community where wellness is the path to an energizing and fulfilling life.
At SyteraYoga, we believe in an individualized approach that makes yoga fun and accessible to all by recognizing each studentâs unique needs. To make this a reality, we offer expert teachers, diverse classes, a service mindset, and an inclusive, welcoming community.
Opening on New Yearâs Day, our philosophy has always been one of new beginnings and new possibilities. While we celebrate the deep wisdom of yogaâs rich past, we also embrace the positive potential of the future. We invite you to be part of our journey, and to grow and learn with us.
