Moving from the Organs
with Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D., P.T. OCT 25-29, 2021

We are excited to host Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D., P.T., in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Judith will be sharing her life’s work in moving from the organs. This transformational 5 day event will take place at the Delta Virginia Beach Bayfront Suites located at 2800 Shore Drive.

We often focus on practicing our poses from the spine, arms, and legs. But the ancient teachings of yoga also dealt with the opening and quieting the organs of the body, like the heart, kidneys, and liver, that are found in the “kunda” or vessel holding these organs.

During this workshop, Judith will focus on specific poses that create a healthy balance for the organs in the chest and abdomen, as well as explore the theories of why they work. All types of poses will be studied, including backbends, inversions, forward bends, and twists.

Judith will also spend some time on specific therapeutic applications that will be immediately applicable to ourselves and to our students. She will begin each day with a focus intention and then go directly to practicing active poses. In the second session of the day, we will focus on a Quiet Practice – Restorative yoga, meditation, and pranayama. Throughout the workshop we will return our awareness to stabilizing and balancing from the inside, as well as focusing on how to teach others to do so.

Slow movements and deep breathing increase blood flow and warm up muscles while holding a pose can build strength.

Try it: Tree Pose (Vrikshasana)
Balance on one foot, while holding the other foot to your calf or above the knee (but never on the knee) at a right angle. Find your Dhristi! Try to focus on one spot in front of you, while you balance for one minute.

#StaffHighlight Meet Kristin Dean

Kristin found yoga after a diagnosis of an autoimmune disorder in 2009. She quickly realized that contemplative practices like yoga and meditation play an integral role in health and healing. She is a mom to human and dog children, loves to hike, read, write, and garden.

💚How would you describe your teaching style?
Kristin’s classes involve meditation, sun salutations, twists, backbends, inversions, and balancing postures. She encourages students to listen to their bodies, focusing on the sensations received while moving through postures. As always, safety is paramount.

💚Who would you recommend taking your classes?
Kristin recognizes that we all have varying degrees of abilities. Flexibility and strength are not required! We all have to start somewhere. Showing up to class is more than half the battle.

💚What does yoga mean to you?
Yoga is a form of self-care and can lead to self-transformation. It means listening to your body as well as becoming aware of your thoughts; without this, moving through the postures is simply fitness.

💚Your favorite asana and Why?
That’s impossible for me to choose. It’s like picking a favorite child.

Hello Yoga Family,
One uncharted, uncontrolled, heartbreaking, disruptive, and fascinating year later, and here we are. We are definitely not on the "other side" of anything, and right where we were meant to be all along. As we were taught in this practice to be in the present moment which has kept us both grounded and focused.

To be very honest, our practice to stay present and our mantra, “ it's all good” has faltered over this last year. The hardship of permanently closing our Chesapeake location was a gut-wrenching door to close... What was a beautiful brand-new space that we put our hearts and soul into for nearly 4 years was a devastating loss. Letting the students down that we had grown to call family was even more of a blow. Our mantra is surely stronger some days than others. We have both struggled throughout this pandemic to keep our Studio Bamboo community connected and have remained strong in our faith that we will get through this.

As we sit here and reflect on the last year after closing our doors 1-year ago this week, we are in awe of everything we have co-created. We had to change our business model within a few days. Erica and I became tech support as we shifted to a virtual studio to accommodate our members. There were a lot of learning curves -for EVERYONE! At times, there are still glitches. It is in these moments of trials and tribulations that kindness goes a long way.

One full pandemic year later, Erica and I are still here. We have worked harder this year than ever, and are committed to the longevity of our community. What we have witnessed is breathtaking: a community that transcends a physical location. We are continually reminded of why we started this business in the first place: community and service. This past year, while uncontrollable, challenging, confusing, isolating, and devastating, has brought us back to the realization that community and family come first. The experience was an exercise in relevance... anything that was no longer relevant was forced to shed. And anything that is still relevant has come to the surface. May we all understand on a more intimate level the importance of family, friendship, community, and love.

So, whether you joined us for a drop-in, new student offer, or purchased a membership during the height of the pandemic, or have stayed with us through it all as an annual member, we want to say thank you. Thank you, from the bottom of our heart, your support has meant more to us than you will ever know. The fact we have been able to weather the largest part of this storm speaks volumes. We are certainly not in the clear, yet with your support, we have faith that the sun will be shining on the other side.

Strength. Balance. Growth.

For the days we did not have it, your support has given us strength. Our staff has been a pillar. Their ambition, drive, and love of this community have balanced our fears. Growth is often uncomfortable, messy, and full of feelings we were not expecting. Growth is necessary to move forward. To overcome this last year and months ahead we are grateful that our roots are patient and resilient much like bamboo keeping us strong and grounded.

In return, we hope we have given you strength, balance, and growth in your practice during this time. Erica and I are so very grateful for our community and the family you have become. Our gratitude is at its highest. We look forward to the time when we can all meet again safely in our beautiful space together.
