WHY WE PLAY WEDNESDAY

PLAY is critical for building and expanding cognitive, language, social-emotional, and motor skills.

Let’s take the activity of playing on the slide at the park. What are the developmental benefits for young children? 👏 Figuring our how to get up the slide. 👏 Motor planning the sequence of steps necessary to complete the task. 👏 Walking up the ladder while learning to alternate feet. 👏 Asking for help when needed. 👏 Using both hands on the railing to climb. 👏 Getting the attention of others “Watch me!” 👏 Waiting and taking turns. 👏 Requesting recurrence “More!” or “Again!” 👏

You see, PLAY IS LEARNING! And this is why pediatric therapists and early childhood educators promote and value play-based activities.

I am a proud DEFENDER OF PLAY. How about you?

My Munch Bug - Melanie Potock

Tongue ties don’t just impact breastfeeding success, they can also contribute to picky eating from the time babies start solids to much later in life. I have had SO MANY kids who end up on my caseload in elementary school because they “never grew out of picky eating as a toddler” and the culprit all along was a strand of tissue commonly called a tongue tie. We all have a frenum that helps anchor our tongue, but when that tissue is too restrictive kids tend to stick to “squish and swallow foods” like chicken nuggets, fries, yogurt, fish crackers…food that just SQUISH between the teeth and are easily swallowed.

😛Here are a few FUNCTIONAL signs that your child may have a tongue tie (ankyloglossia) and would require an evaluation by an experienced speech pathologist who specializes in feeding and knows how to perform an exam for tethered oral tissues (lip ties, tongue ties, buccal ties):

🥄 Spoon and Finger Feeding
🤨Retraction of tongue upon presentation of the spoon.
🙁Inadequate caloric intake due to inefficiency and fatigue.
😢Tactile oral sensitivity secondary to limited stimulation/mobility of tongue.
😘Over-use of lips, especially lower lip.
😩Difficulty progressing from “munching” to a more lateral, mature chewing
pattern.
🧐Tongue restriction may influence swallowing patterns and cause
compensatory motor movements, which may lead to additional
complications, such as “sucking back” the bolus in order to propel it to be
swallowed.
😡Possible development of picky, hesitant or selective eating because eating
certain foods are challenging.
🤢Gagging and subsequent vomiting when food gets “stuck” on tongue.
😠Secondary behaviors to avoid discomfort that are thus protective in nature, such as refusing to sit at the table or being able to eat only when distracted.
🥤Requiring frequent sips of liquid to wash down bolus.
👉🏻Did you know that celebrity chef ( Cravings by Chrissy Teigen ) recently shared that her daughter had a tongue tie? It’s more common than you think, and best checked by a specialist. For more information on tongue & lip ties, please click https://mymunchbug.com/?s=tongue+tie

Play's Powerful Role in Child Development

Words of Wisdom Wednesday
_______________________________

“How much play-based movement has your child had today?”

This is a common question that I ask parents, especially when they are concerned about their child’s behaviors or development.

Working in the DIGITAL AGE has created a new concern for pediatric therapists and early childhood educators.

Kids today aren’t getting enough play-based movement. Period. Playing outside has been replaced with playing on the iPad. Playing with toys has been replaced with watching other people playing on YouTube. Play-based movement has been replaced with sedentary entertainment and instruction.

Can young children rote memorize certain concepts such as letters, numbers, shapes, and colors while playing educational apps or while watching educational shows? Yep.

But can young children gain functional communication skills, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, social skills, self help skills, or self regulation skills while playing on a tablet or while watching TV? Nope.

So, as an early intervention provider and consultant, I spend thoughtful time educating families and caregivers on the importance of play-based movement in early childhood.

Get the babies out of the immobilizing containers. Put the babies on the floor...on their tummies as much as possible.

For toddlers and preschoolers...turn off the screens and get out the toys. Go outside as much as possible. And when all else fails, just add water. Water play makes everyone happy. Or bubbles...they’re magical too. Blocks reign supreme over all the toys in the toy room. And cars...and toy animals...and Mr. Potato Head.

I’ve been a speech-language pathologist for over 2 decades and one thing I’ve learned in the last few years is this: We must work harder than ever to preserve childhood in the Digital Age.

Childhood is supposed to be a time for discovery and exploration...but there won’t be many opportunities for learning through play while young children are sitting on the couch glued to a screen.

Establish screen time rules. And follow them. Make play a priority and restore childhood for this generation of children. Their future depends on it.
