Chair Yoga 10:30am every Friday! 🧘🏻‍♀️

Join @drtarapandiscia for an hour of movement and breath. We’ll practice seated position primarily with option for standing postures, but no floor based poses in this class. Chair is a great option at the end of physical therapy as well as great preventative measures 👏🏻

“I love my new AFOs but I want to be able to wear sandals and cute shoes!” It can be a challenge to find footwear that is AFO or brace friendly but @drtarapandiscia and @lrwilson were determined to find cute shoes that she could wear and still walk safely with her AFOs. So we went shopping @dsw to find the perfect pair (or 6)!

We knew the shoe needed to be flat but we found that a platform also worked out well and didn’t cause significant gait changes that would throw off her balance.

We found that a strap around the heel would slide down and off the heel - not safe with her style of #AFO. This ruled out a lot of cute sandals. But a strap up around the ankle worked well and held the shoe securely in place.

Many of the sandals had straps too tight or not stretchy enough on the top of the foot or around the ankle - the more adjustable the better!

Our favorite finds for fit, function, and style were these Steve Madden black strappy sandals and MIA platform sandals (in black and rose gold)! Need a brand ambassador @mia, @stevemadden, @dsw? @lrwilson is your girl 👋🏼

What in the world is cupping? Why is it used? What’s up with those cupping marks?

MyoFascial Cupping is the therapeutic application of cups designed to release and mobilize soft tissue restrictions, increase blood flow, facilitate lymphatic movement, etc. Cupping goes by many names - MyoFascial Cupping, Cup Therapy, Cupping...
There are multiple benefits of cupping including:

-Increase blood flow to aid in healing

-Assist with lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling and edema

-Modulate pain through enkephalin release

-Desensitize regions of pain and irritability

-Increase soft tissue length and extensibility

-Reduce muscle spasm

-Improve mobility quickly via stretch reflex modulation

-Mobilize scar tissue and adhesions

-Release trigger points painlessly

-Reduce tissue stiffness and viscosity

-Release nerve entrapments and improve nerve mobility

And those cupping marks:

The bruising is likely due to small capillary rupture. The dark circular cupping marks are not evidence of “stagnant blood” or unhealthy tissue and you don’t have to have bruises to get positive results. Redness is likely due to temporary vasodilation and raising or “anti-pitting” indicates thickened, viscous, protein rich ground substance in the extracellular matrix. In other words, the tissue is boggy.

If you are dealing with muscular or myofascial pain or discomfort and generalized stiffness and are interested in cupping, please do not hesitate to call 757-578-2958, email [email protected], or visit our website to make an appointment today!

Let’s address some common myths about Osteoarthritis (OA)
MYTH: Osteoarthritis is a progressive, degenerative disease and the only cure is a joint replacement.
REALITY: Many people with OA will never need a joint replacement! It can be possible to manage your pain and continue to participate in all of the activities that you enjoy without surgery. While a joint replacement may be the right choice for some people, lifestyle changes including an anti-inflammatory diet, regular exercise, stress management, and weight loss are effective interventions that can help you manage arthritis pain without surgery.

MYTH: Osteoarthritis pain is caused by wear and tear or old age.
REALITY: Recent research has shown that Osteoarthitis is an inflammatory condition that is exacerbated by chronic, low-grade inflammation. This is good news because it means that we likely can control both the pain and the progression of OA by making anti-inflammatory lifestyle changes.

MYTH: Exercise will make arthritis pain and degeneration worse.
REALITY: Research shows that our cartilage needs regular loading to stay healthy - just like everything else in our body, use it or lose it! Spending most of the time sitting/resting or having a sedentary lifestyle actually causes more cartilage break down while regular, moderate loading (exercise) helps maintain our cartilage health and prevent further degeneration by improving blood flow and reducing inflammation.

MYTH: Running is bad for your joints and causes arthritis
REALITY: Studies show that runners have no

Movement Snacks!
Do you feel like you don’t have time to exercise? Sometimes the thought of a long workout session can be overwhelming, especially when we are busy or tired, and it might seem easier to just skip it altogether... We’ve all been there! Enter the “movement snack” concept! Adding in short bouts of exercise throughout your day can add up and help you meet your physical activity goals.
You can add in movement snacks by adding in a 5-10 minute walk during your day, setting timers throughout the day to remind you to get up and move, or you could #habitstack and add in exercise with daily tasks such as standing on one leg in the check out lane at the grocery store, every time you brush your teeth you hold a wall sit, or every time you walk in to the kitchen you do 5 squats or sit to stands. Try to find a way that works for you to make these snacks part of your routine.
A few of our favorite “snacks” include squats or sit to stands, wall sits, one leg balance, push-ups (floor or counter level both work), walking, and planks. Maybe it’s 1 minute or 5 minutes, but it all adds up!
