“I am a woman who came from the cotton fields of the South. From there I was promoted to the washtub. From there I was promoted to the cook kitchen. And from there I promoted myself into the business of manufacturing hair goods and preparations… I have built my own factory on my own ground.”
This morning I felt an overwhelming calling to attend a yoga class, unplanned. The instructor shared a brief story of Madam CJ Walker. I felt compelled to learn more about her. In this moment I knew I was exactly where I was suppose to be. -Alisha
The life of Sarah Breedlove (1867–1919) – who later became known as Madam CJ Walker – is a true ‘rags-to-riches’ story. She was the first person in her family to be born after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, on the Louisiana plantation where her parents and older siblings were previously enslaved. By the time she died, at the age of 51, she was living in a mansion a few miles away from American business magnate John D Rockefeller, with a hair product company that provided income for thousands of African-American women.
The seed for her business success was sown during the 1890s, when Breedlove began experiencing hair loss as a result of a common scalp ailment. Desperate for a cure, she began testing a number of homemade hair remedies and store-bought treatments, ultimately settling on a product of her own creation. After seeing its results first-hand, Breedlove changed her name to Madam CJ Walker and began marketing her hair treatment as ‘Madam Walker’s Wonderful Hair Grower’. It was a decision that set her on course to become a pioneer of the modern black hair-care and cosmetics industry – and a millionaire by default. At the time of her death, her estate is estimated to have exceeded $1m.

Big transformation on Saturday!!! I love bobs so much!!!!!!

We are so pleased to report that both Selene and Alisha have received their Covid booster vaccines. It is of the upmost importance to us as a team that we are doing what we can to keep our clients, ourselves, and our community healthy.

Last call for TIGI! Stock up in your favorites!
All TIGI 50% off this week only. If you can’t make it this week send me a message and we can set an order aside for you!
Regrettably TIGI is discontinuing their professional lines. Our rep at Bassett helped us find a new line we fell in love with, and we know you will love it too!
Over the years, we had some great themed photo shoots and runway shows! There was "Geisha", "Marie Antoinette", "Burlesque", and 50's that we had acquired some really fun costumes for. Well, if anyone has an idea for a costume, you might want to check out Goodwill. Jan did some purging today. It was time...Such good memories!

What an amazing first few days Selene Salem and I have had in our new space. Thank you to all of you from the bottom of our hearts. We have had a few growing pains getting the phone number installed. It is currently forwarded to my cell phone. When I return your call it will come from another number. Hopefully we will have that sorted out soon. Signage is coming soon too! Our new address is 2019 Issacs. You can park out front or behind Baskin Robins. We thank all of you for continued support and cannot wait to see you in our new space soon!!

When salons had to close in March, it was the first time since my early teens that I was without work. My life revolved around being busy, and I liked it that way. COVID has been a huge change of pace and lifestyle. With three kids home, I was suddenly thrust into navigating ‘trying’ to be a learning coach. I adopted the attitude pretty early on that we would get done what we could and not worry about the rest. I had no intention of making all of us frazzled with a situation that was out of our control. We learned to slow down and live with less. We stayed home and spent hours on home improvements to make our home more enjoyable. We landscaped, gardened, and installed a mini outdoor theater.
When I heard the news salons in Walla Walla County were able to open I was over the moon and excited to return to work. As I was working on a schedule I quickly realized we did not want to put our children in childcare and even if we did childcare was wildly unavailable. I could not just return to what was before. I became crazy with anxiety about what I would do to get back. After much reflection, I once again came to the conclusion that I was putting too much pressure on myself, and that I can only do what I can do and stressing about the rest was not helpful for me, my family, or my clients. My husband and I were able to find a schedule that fit our family needs, and I was so pleased to return to work, a few weeks behind Jan and Selene.
I am now working less, and I have learned to appreciate that, but sometimes still struggle. I am working a later shift, which has filled a need for clients that need later appointments. I have realized the importance of creating low maintenance hairstyles to fit my clients time and budget needs. I am also keeping myself in a lower maintenance style. I have discovered and explored my love for vivid, non-traditional hair colors and plan to continue to develop this niche.
We are all struggling through this time together, in many different ways. Give grace to yourself and others, you can only do what you can do. Make room for the things that bring you joy, and let go of things that do not. Letting go only creates space to receive.

We practice ! Happy to help our Rotary club at Frog Hollow Farms harvest tomatoes for BMAC Food Bank.

When we reopened after 2 1/2 months of quarantine, I was so happy to be back at work, mostly to see all of my clients. I also felt down because it wasn’t going to be the same experience, because I was not able to hug my clients.
I had made a decision in solidarity with my clients to become low maintenance with my own hair. No color (I love my natural color as it turns out!), and I have kept this in mind for my clients. If we should have to close again (fingers crossed it doesn’t happen), they will be able to look good and wait for me.
I learned a lot during the shutdown. I realized I was working too much, I don’t need a lot of things and a quiet life is good. I am now working a few less hours, and am definitely thankful to be back to work with my wonderful friends.
Selene

June 1, our first day of reopening, I felt so many things on my drive to work. Anxiety, anticipation, hopefulness, excitement...The thing that saddened me most was the loss of the pampering/beautifying aspect of our industry in the very beginning. I couldn't imagine sending clients out of the salon without styling/finishing. (Thankfully that didn't have to last too long.)
What I have realized is that I look at each of my clients differently now. I am very aware of keeping people in easy, low-maintenance styles and colour processes. I find I'm acutely aware of all the possible scenarios from maintaining Phase 2 for a prolonged period of time to rolling back as neighboring communities have had to do.
I know we're all learning a lot about ourselves and each other during this time. Today I am thankful, and oh so happy to be in the salon with friends.
Jan

Call or message to request your appointment.

Thank you for 10 years of partnership and adventures! You were an amazing stylist and teacher. Many stylists are better because you shared your talent. We wish you all the best in your retirement from the industry and next endeavors.
It's heart wrenching to say "We're so sorry, but no." to all the people calling from Tri-Cities, Yakima, and Seattle trying to schedule an appointment. We understand, don't we? It seemed forever that we were in Phase 1. We are being exceedingly careful. We are taking care of YOU, our precious clients.
"Happy Face

This makes everything worth it. We are here because we love our clients.

We are in support of those who need it. We proudly stand for equal treatment in this great country of ours.
Please join us for a peaceful Rally and Call to Action, this Sunday, June 7 at 1:00 p.m. in front of Land Title Plaza in downtown Walla Walla.
Please come wearing masks. Please be conscious of social distancing. We care about everyone's safety.
If you do not feel comfortable joining the crowd but would still like to attend, please come early, park close by and listen from your vehicle.
We'd like to extend our thanks to all who protested peacefully with us last Sunday. We will continue to protest. We will push for tangible reform and policy changes in the Walla Walla Valley.
