For Marine Veteran, Brenna Wakefield, military service was a catalyst to finding her passion of becoming a mental health clinician. After answering her country’s call to serve, she is now answering another call to help the most vulnerable in our communities.

On this Giving Tuesday, we would like to highlight one of our many Help A Hero Scholarship recipients!

VFW Sports Clips Help A Hero Scholarship has helped Shane Gardiner attend the University of Arizona.

“The Help A Hero Scholarship affords me the opportunity to commit myself to my goal of obtaining a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and attending law school. I will never forget this award and thank you for the scholarship.”

The Help A Hero Scholarship has allowed Shane to pursue his dreams free from the financial worries of higher education.

"This scholarship is so much more than funds to me. It is time that I will be able to spend in the classroom instead of the workplace, and expedience towards my goals. It is knowledge that I will carry with me for the rest of my days, both of the curriculum I will be learning and of the kindness of others."

Leading up to Giving Tuesday, Sport Clips and VFW are sharing stories from eight Veterans who received scholarships.

During the height of COVID-19 pandemic, Navy veteran Stephanie Drake knew she wanted to do more. As an already licensed kinesiologist, she saw first-hand the strain the medical community was experiencing. “I realized I was out of touch with the current needs of the medical field. Now I am pursuing an accelerated post-bachelors program with the University of St. Thomas to become a registered nurse.”

Like so many fellow veterans, and all Help A Hero scholars, Stephanie was driven by a desire to serve her community. “I would never have known that I could succeed in the medical field had I not served in the military.”

The VFW Sports Clips Help A Hero Scholarship is largely funded by VFW members and Sports Clips owners and stylists with 100% of funds going directly to the scholarship awards.

Air Force reservist Matthew Hagery has big dreams to pursue – and the VFW Sports Clips Help A Hero scholarship is helping him on his way! “I plan to use this scholarship to further pursue my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and to commission as an officer in the Air Force.”

“Through my service, I have learned to use leadership, selflessness, and integrity to better serve those around me and accomplish my goals”, Matthew says.

While in the Navy, Juan Preciado learned that “Leadership is not a title or position, it is action and example. Which is why I am continuing my education at the University of Texas for a degree in Public Affairs.” Driven by his love of public service, Juan believes that “anyone can be a leader and step up when the opportunity presents itself.”

For Air Force veteran Christopher Tripp, time in combat was hugely influential in his pursuit of higher education. “Witnessing the immense need and difficulty that remained in the wake of military conflict, [led me] to study Conflict Resolution, Strategic Management and Cultural Studies.”

He was awarded the VFW Sports Clips Help A Hero Scholarship to study at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin Germany. “It was my desire to earn my higher education...that led me on the path to military enlistment.”

Army Veteran Brendan Freeman has always known he wanted to live a life of service. “All that I have ever wanted to do with life is give back; mainly because the same was done for me.” It was during his 7.5 years of military service that Brendan discovered a passion for healthcare.

Thanks to Help A Hero, Brendan is currently studying to become a Physician’s Assistant at Pfeiffer University.

“I’m incredibly thankful for my time in the Army National Guard. I firmly believe that my military experience will not only help me achieve my dream of becoming a PA but allow me to provide care to patients in the best possible way.”
