ACC members, take note: this one is for you.
Nike nearly doubled the compensation of its Chief Legal Officer, signaling something far bigger than one company's pay decision.
Across Fortune 500 companies, a powerful shift is underway. Legal leadership is no longer just about managing risk. Today's CLOs are driving digital transformation, navigating international markets, protecting intellectual property, and shaping corporate governance at the highest levels. And compensation? It's finally catching up.
The numbers tell a clear story: compensation for in-house legal roles continues to rise as companies expand budgets to secure and retain high-caliber legal talent in an increasingly complex regulatory environment. Most ACC Members have thought about it. But nobody wants to be the one to ask it out loud.
Will AI replace lawyers?
And the honest answer is: No, but it will change what it means to be one. The billable hour is under pressure, and AI is accelerating the reckoning.
The widening gap between law firms and in-house legal teams on the pricing, measurement, and value of legal services was a key topic of discussion at the recent Financial Times' Innovative Lawyers Global Summit, where ACC President & CEO Jason L. Brown joined industry leaders to explore the issue.
The billable hour has long been the default, with in-house clients typically charged in six-minute increments regardless of the services or deliverables. However, a model based purely on time is beginning to show its age. Alternatives have been gaining momentum for years, and generative AI is pushing the conversation to a tipping point. In fact, a recent ACC survey found that 61 percent of respondents were likely to push their current law firms to explore new billing models.
The question is no longer if pricing will change. It's when, and who will lead it.
