A portrait of English mathematician Alan Turing, created by the humanoid robot Ai-Da, has become the first artwork by a robot to be sold at auction, fetching $1.08 million (£566,000).

The 2.2-meter (7.5-foot) portrait, titled A.I. God. Portrait of Alan Turing, far exceeded its pre-sale estimate of $120,000 to $180,000 at Sotheby’s, where it received 27 bids.

Ai-Da, the world’s first ultra-realistic robot artist, said: “The key value of my work is its ability to spark dialogue on emerging technologies." The robot also addedd that the portrait of Turing invites reflection on the God-like nature of AI and its ethical implications.
