The Difference Between a Barber, a Hairstylist and Me!

I often am asked whats the difference between a barber and a hairstylist. Please remember that I am generally speaking. So here it is:

A barber is trained in cutting very traditional styles and employs scissor over comb and clipper over comb techniques to produce short haircuts (remember the crew cut, and flat top). Along with this they are trained in shaving techniques. For the most part, going to the barber is very often like a whirlwind experience. You sit down and whichever barber finishes first (unless you want to wait for a specific person) is who cuts your hair. Generally you are in and out in minutes.

A stylist is trained in both women and men’s cutting and styling techniques. Layering, texturizing, hair color and other chemical services. They are taught how the hair grows, moves, cutting at different angles to achieve specific looks, and taking in account facial structure, face shape and head shape. If for instance a man wears a longer style, a stylist would be best suited for the job.

As for myself, I was trained initially as a Hair Stylist (I figured, hey, why limit myself? As long as I was going to school, I should get the most out of it right?). It was later that I learned barbering techniques. I bring to the table knowledge from both schools, as well as ongoing education to continually keep up with what is most current. Most recently I received training in European barbering techniques while in Italy. I employ scissor and clipper over comb as well as layering techniques. I take into account not only facial and head shape, but confer with you as to career and lifestyle so that we both are on the same page. I also bring over 32 years of experience.

So there you have it! Now when someone asks YOU the difference, you can tell them I told you!

Have a great week!

Dave

To Gray or To Stay

What image comes to mind when you think of guys who color their hair? The guy at the office who comes in one day with his “white” brows and orange toned hair or perhaps the Uncle who at 75 years of age with black hair? Hell no, I’m not going there!

At a time when youth or the image of youth is so much stressed, many men are scrambling to look better, be it from daily exercise and “eating to live,” or to taking more care in grooming. I read that British men spend at least 18 minutes a day on their grooming. Not bad! As a Barber/Stylist I had always stayed away from men’s color because I hated that “Grecian Formula” look. Finally a product was created that gave me the boost to go ahead and chat up my clients about color. The result? Nothing less then impressed. I finally was able to offer my guy’s a hair color that can “blend” the grays into their natural color and shave off the years WITHOUT other’s jeering on the sidelines. One particular client was so nervous about the thought but called me 2 days later to say even his wife didn’t realize what he had done but commented that for “some reason” he looked different.

With my Camoflauge technique we can cover the gray or leave the amount of gray we choose to. In 1o minutes, you can take years off as it gently fades away over a few weeks with none the wiser. Men today are choosing to take better care of themselves and look better, from haircuts every 3-4 weeks to working out to designer suits. Why not have the color of your hair match the rest of your self image? Give me 10 minutes and get ready to be impressed!

Regards,

Dave
