Dancers, have you done any cross training this week?? 😱

Dancers need to implement cross training into their routine regularly to maintain cardiorespiratory endurance and strength that is needed to support you while you dance. 🩰

Without cross training outside of your dance technique, you may be at an increased risk of injury. 😰

Cross training can be as simple as taking a brisk walk, streaming a guided strength or cardio workout online, or hitting the mat for some Pilates or yoga. There are many options to meet your cardio and strength needs! 😍

I cannot tell you the number of dancers who struggle with activation through their deep outward rotators or “turnout” muscles 😰

Clams can be a great Pilates matwork exercise to challenge your deep core stability and train your turnout muscles 👍
.
However, you need to have proper positioning and form to make sure you are activating through the appropriate muscle groups 🤔
.

Check out this head-to-toe checklist to upgrade your weight bearing exercises on hands and knees and increase the activation of your deep stabilizing muscles 😏

✅ Length through the back of your neck with a gentle chin nod maintained
✅ Hands positioned slightly forward from your shoulders with fingers splayed & pressing gently into your mat
✅ Chest pressing away from the floor to stabilize your shoulder blades & prevent winging
✅ Elbows slightly unlocked
✅ Neutral spine maintained with deep core active
✅ Knees positioned under hip joints with pelvis neutral and level throughout

Turn out disks can be a great tool to teach proper activation of the deep outward rotators of your hip without compensation from other areas ✨
.
The disks create a relatively frictionless surface, preventing your body from gripping the floor and compensating at your knees, ankles, and feet to gain greater turnout range 👍
.
By controlling the motion all the way into a turned-in position as seen in the video, you get the added benefit of working through your full functional range and allowing lengthening of your deep outward rotators 🙌
.

Dancing en pointe can be so beautiful, but it also increases the demands dancers place on their bodies 🩰

The more stability you have through your core muscles, especially your deep abdominal muscles, the more control you will have of your body as you turn, leap, jump, balance, and tumble. 👍
.
To put it simply, having central stability allows you to have more mobility and control as you train and perform. 👏
.
In this timelapse, you see me going through a Pilates flow to target core stability! My form, stability, and endurance is a work in progress, as my core is definitely one of the areas that needs some extra attention… but remember, only practice will make room for improvement and progression! ✨
