Hey everyone, let’s talk about something incredibly important this September! Did you know that September is Brain Conditions Awareness Month? It’s a time when we shine a light on neurological disorders like Chiari malformation and hydrocephalus, which can have a profound impact on people’s lives.

I wanted to share a bit of my own journey with you all, not just as your nail tech, but as someone navigating a brain condition. Earlier in 2024, after an unexpected run-in with a hard rake (yes, seriously!), I sustained a severe concussion. What followed was a difficult period of constant headaches, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, and way too many trips to the ER. After what felt like endless tests and uncertainty, I was finally diagnosed with Chiari malformation.

For those who might not know, Chiari malformation is a condition where brain tissue extends into your spinal canal. Imagine your brain not having quite enough space, leading to pressure and a whole host of challenging symptoms.

Last August, I underwent brain surgery to remove some vertebrae at the top of my spinal cord to create more space. While I’m incredibly grateful for the medical care I received, the recovery journey is ongoing. Even a year later, I’m still not totally healed. There are days when the headaches and dizziness persist, my thoughts feel foggy, and sometimes the words just don’t come out right. It’s a daily battle, and while I know healing takes time, there are certainly days I feel like I’m going backward.

My personal experience has given me a much deeper understanding of the struggles many face with brain conditions. It’s why I’m so passionate about raising awareness this month. Whether it’s Chiari, hydrocephalus, or any other neurological challenge, increased understanding leads to better support, more research, and ultimately, better outcomes for everyone.
