🔥 Fire honey season! So easy to make 🍯

07/21/2026

Queen check!
Egg check!
Drawn comb progress check!
Placed honey supers over bee escapes!
(This helps to get the bees out of the honey frames before they are pulled for extraction)

Are the bees having a glow party? 🎉

This is where my mind went when I observed Jeff shining his cell phone flashlight on the feeding bucket.

🔦 But what’s really going on is we were checking the levels of sugar water left in the container. This one is about half empty.

Feeding the bees is a topic we’ve been wanting to write about to help those interested understand the purpose…

🌼 Now that the main nectar flow is over and honey supers have been removed, the bee population is still very high from the spring build up and the bees have almost nothing to do. 🐝 🥱

📈To take advantage of the population and give the bees a job we put sugar syrup on the hives with bare foundation frames. We do this with the biggest and strongest colony’s. 💪 💪

🍯The syrup will mimic a nectar flow and the bees will draw comb. This is where they built out the wax on the empty frames. These drawn out empty comb frames become a valuable resource come spring. They are placed in the hives for various reasons, including for the queen to lay eggs in. 🥚 🥚 🥚

🛒 Unlike what you may get from the grocery store, the honey made from syrup will NOT be extracted, and the bees will ultimately pack it in their brood chamber for winter stores.

✅ Last week, the first frames of the season were pulled and bottled. 14% moisture content makes for some thick honey! This was before all the rain.
🐝 The bees have been focused on Locust and Autumn Olive trees. The color is much lighter than last years so far. The taste is sweet and floral 🌺

The favorite Queen was found outside the hive on the ground. Jeff noticed her little dot of color in the grass as he was checking out the hives at dusk. Her hive is strong and productive, yet gentle in temperament. Hopefully, those genetics will remain with her successor.

🌳 Have you noticed all the white blossoms on the trees lately?

It’s Black Locust season here and the bees are having their fill of this sweet nectar. It makes for a very sweet honey 🍯

We are getting excited for this years product, 🐝-ing made as we speak!

Long day of tending bees and keeping queens happy!

During the recent hot days, the bees could be observed cooling the hives and drying early nectar intake! On the main menu currently is Autumn Olive, Wisteria and Black Willow.
