The Good, The Bad & The Ugly – Chapstick Update 💋

The GOOD:
By FAR the best chapstick I have EVER used. Like… I’m obsessed. My lips feel AMAZING!!

The BAD:
Unless these are a BIG hit, I don’t think I’ll continue making them. I have to be realistic about what makes sense for my time and business.

The UGLY:
Making chapstick is MESSY 😅
And SO much more time consuming than tallow balm. Like… A LOT more.

Why does tallow cost more?

Because it’s not just “melt and pour.”

Tallow is LOADED with skin-loving nutrients — but the real cost is in the time, labor, and quality process behind it.

After we purchase high-quality suet from a local butcher, the real work begins.

Our tallow is “rendered” several times.

So what does “rendered” mean?

Rendering is the process of slowly purifying and melting down raw beef fat to remove impurities, moisture, and odor — leaving behind clean, shelf-stable, skin-safe tallow.

And it’s not a one-step process.

✨ It has to be:
• Cut and cleaned
• Slowly heated to melting temperature
• Strained
• Allowed to cool overnight

✨ Then rendered AGAIN (the more times, the cleaner and less “beefy” the smell).

✨ After that, it must be brought to a gentle boil to remove any remaining water — because if water is left behind, mold can grow.

(No shortcuts here.)

✨ Then it cools again.
✨ Reheated to blend in high-quality oils and honey.
✨ Cooled one final time.
✨ Whipped to perfection.
✨ Carefully packaged.

This is days of hands-on work.
