I am so excited to be back out and about for my first event of the season! There’s nothing I love more than getting to create and connect with all of you, so come through and get a henna blessing while I’m there.

Let’s talk about henna and color!

I often get the question, “does henna come in different colors?” The simple and only answer is that henna is a naturally occurring dye that comes in one tone. There are various factors that will affect the richness of the stain, however those don’t cause a difference in actual color tone. Henna is a red-brown color, and is NEVER black. A person’s skin chemistry can cause very minor variations within this palette, but nothing outside of expectation.

What can affect the richness of the stain? The freshness of the henna and dye content due to growing conditions (dryer growth years tend towards higher naturally occurring dye content within the plant itself), the ingredients added to the paste including type of liquid and essential oils, the area of the body on which it is applied, the length of time it is left on the skin, whether a sugar sealant was used, keeping the area of application warm, avoidance of water directly after removing the paste, time and patience allowing the stain to mature, and the aftercare given. Other factors like skin health, hormonal fluctuations, and medications can also affect how well a person’s skin stains. When working with a professional artist they should be able to discuss these factors with you if there are any concerns. Consultation can be key! Especially when getting henna to mark a special occasion or big life event.

There are ways of utilizing the natural oxidation process in order to feature the stain at different depths and maturity which can give an illusion of variation in color in a design. This involves applying the initial design, allowing the stain to reach maturity, and then doing a second application of henna that is left on the skin for a short period of time before removing, leaving the fresh “pumpkin orange” stain. Although this requires two appointments, it is a wonderful way of adding extra depth to a design that is being worn for a special occasion.
