“Why do you color your soaps brown?”

This is a question I have heard a few times, over the past year. But we do not deliberately make our soaps brown. That brown color is caused by vanillin, a compound that is found in vanilla-scented fragrances that oxidizes while the soap is curing. Even a small amount of vanillin can cause your soap to change color. This color change is purely cosmetic and does not have any affect on the soap’s lathering or cleansing abilities. The color will not wash off onto your body or stain your washcloth.

Instead of trying to use a lot of micas or colorants to hide the effects of the vanillin, we embrace that natural coloration and use it to make swirls, or layers in our soaps.

So, if you are a fan of the bakery scents, keep an eye out for that rich brown soap. It may be the sweet treat you’ve been looking for!
