Retinol 101, a guide to retinol

⏳ The biggest issue people tend to have with skincare is that they want results immediately, ingredients and actives take time to truly transform your skin, be patient!

🤏🏻 When it comes to retinol, less is more. Apply just a pea sized amount of product to the entire face.

⬇️ Start with a low percentage to acclimate your skin as retinol is a very strong active.

☀️ Wear your sunscreen, it’s always important but it’s especially important when using retinols.

🗓 Start slow, begin with only using your retinol 1-2x’s a week and build up from there.

🧪 Don’t mix your retinol with other actives as it can compromise your skins barrier and become too harsh on the skin.

Summer is coming and for many people that can mean sunburns. If you find yourself with a itchy, painful burn this summer, here are a few tips to treat it.

🧪Avoid actives and alcohols in your skincare routine as they can irritate and dry out the inflamed skin.

🚿Take cool showers rather than hot to eliminate skin dehydration and soothe irritation and itching.

💧Increase your water intake, sunburns draw fluids to the skins surface away from the rest of your body. Increasing your water intake will prevent dehydration.

💊Consider taking aspirin or advil to help reduce the pain, redness, inflammation and swelling in the skin.

🧴Apply moisturizer to damp skin to ensure that you are locking in moisture and hydration into the skin.

☀️Stay out of the heat and sun to avoid further burning, sun poisoning and irritation.

Did you know there is a difference between retinol and retinoids?

Retinol:

🧪 a gentle form of vitamin A.

🧪 available OTC.

🧪 retinol must convert into retinoic acid before an effect takes place, making it less potent.

🧪 takes about 12 weeks to see improvement.

Retinoid:

🧪 umbrella term for RX retinoids such as tretinoin (containing retinoic acid).

🧪 retinoic acid is the most active form of vitamin A, making it the most potent.

🧪 takes about 3-4 weeks to see improvement.

⚠️ MUST KNOW INFO
* neither are pregnancy or breastfeeding safe.
* start applying 2-3x’s a week and increase as tolerance builds.
* SPF is non negotiable while using this product… and all the time.

The acne series continues, there is an ongoing list of acne triggers, this graphic focuses on some of the common triggers.

🧬 Genetics are often a large part of acne, while there is no specific acne gene is is very common that family history of acne plays a part in acne-prone skin.

🍃 Algae can have many benefits however it is not beneficial for acne. the high iodine content of spirulina and chlorella make them an acne trigger.
(sources can be: smoothies, supplements and some skincare)

⚖️ Hormone changes and imbalances can be a large trigger for acne, as the hormones change it has a large impact on the skin leading to irritation and inflammation.

🙍🏼‍♀️ Stress and stressful environments can quickly lead to breakouts, the immune system and body take a hit when we are stressed and the skin and immune system are directly related to one another via the langerhan cells.

🍽 The foods we eat can cause inflammation not only internally but externally as well. Often people forget that the skin is not only an external organ. Eating inflammatory foods can trigger and worsen acne… Looking for acne safe foods? check out my acne series post on acne safe foods.

💊 B12 can be very triggering to acne, especially in the form of shots and supplements as they are typically larger doses. If you struggle with acne, stay away from B vitamins.
