How to prevent dry hair!

1. Moisturize and Seal Often
Not everyone needs to moisturize and seal every day. Some can easily get away with doing it a few times a week or every other day. So you will need to figure out what works best for you.

2. Baggying your ends
It is done by moisturizing the ends of your hair and then covering them with a plastic cap for several hours.

3. Deep Condition Regularly
Focusing on moisturizing deep conditioners when washing your hair each week. Occasionally every 4-6 weeks rotate in a protein-based deep conditioner to help keep the moisture and protein balanced in the hair.

4. Streaming the hair
Hair steaming is great for dry hair. Especially when paired with a moisturizing deep conditioner as the moist heat helps to lift the hair cuticles allowing the conditioner to really pe*****te your strands. This can help with moisture retention.

5. Clarify your hair at times
Sometimes the reason behind dry hair is product build-up. This is when our hair strands are so coated with hair butters, oils, and other products that it creates a barrier that prevents any moisture from getting to the strands.

6. Stop using direct heat
Direct heat dries out your hair so use less direct heat or none at all if you have hair that tends to be dry.

7. Check your water
If you have hard water it could be a reason for your dry hair. Hard water contains minerals such as calcium and magnesium that can build up on the hair and keep moisture from getting in.

It’s that time again, Relaxer day! I relax my hair 3 times a year, roughly every 16 weeks. I stretch my relaxers to ensure there is no overlapping of relaxer & my previously relaxed hair is not processed again as this can weaken your hair over time & lead to breakage.

Relaxer Day Preparations
One Week Before;
Clarify - Start by washing your hair, in sections, with a clarifying shampoo. This ensures that there is no product buildup that will disrupt the straightening process.
Protein Treatment - Follow up with a protein treatment to strengthen the hair before relaxing.
Deep Condition - Follow up a protein treatment with a moisturizing deep conditioner.
Low manipulation - In the days leading up to your relaxer, keep contact with your hair to a minimum. Try to keep your hands out of your hair as stimulating your scalp close to your relaxer can lead to chemical burns.

The Night Before;
Oil your ends - Oil the full length of your hair with either coconut oil or olive oil. This is to create a barrier between the relaxer and my previously relaxed hair.

This is the best protective hair style I have ever had. It is light, long-lasting and durable meaning it can withstand all weather conditions moreover the more it gets old the better it looks. It ages like fine wine. It is also easy to maintain; all you have to do is moisturize it 3 times a week using the LCO method. It is known as Afro Twists.

There are many factors that can damage your hair. A protective style will keep your hair safe from:

Physical manipulation from daily styling, combing and detangling

Chemicals, colour treatments, or high heat

Environmental pollutants in the air

Excessive moisture from swimming or sweat

Environmental/climate factors such as dry air, cold air, frost, wind, snow, etc.

All of these factors put stress on your hair. Over time, this stress can cause noticeable damage: your strands will look less healthy, feel more dry, or be more prone to breakage. While some factors are completely within your control to eliminate, others are hard to avoid.

Ways to thicken relaxed hair

🌼 Stretch Relaxers
My hair thrives when I relax every 12-16 weeks. By stretching out my relaxers I’m giving my hair a break and allowing my new growth to grow at least 2 inches before re-applying the relaxer on it. When your new growth is not visible, it’s much easier to overlap the relaxer on the previously relaxed hair. This can cause thinness, breakage and overall damage. Stretching your relaxers makes your hair stronger and thicker over time.

🌼 Protect Previously Relaxed Hair
I never relax my hair without my ends being protected from the relaxer. Relaxing previously relaxed hair can cause the hair to be overprocessed eventually leading to thinness and breakage. Protecting the length of the hair to the ends creates a barrier between your hair and the run-off of the relaxer.

🌼 Strength of Relaxers
Normal strength relaxers tend to process the hair at a much slower rate than extra strength relaxers. The normal strength slower process along with the quick relaxer application process results in my hair not being relaxed completely bone straight. There is still some texture left over in my strands. More texture means thicker dense strands.

🌼 Pre-poo with Almond Oil
I like to pre-poo my hair with almond oil before I shampoo. It helps prevent damage to the cuticle. Less damage mean stronger fuller cuticle, which gives you thicker hair.

🌼 Protein Treatments
Incorporate protein treatments in your hair regimen every 4-6 weeks. Protein treatments strengthen and fortify the hair preventing breakage.

The importance of stretching is to allow your new growth to grow at least 2 inches so that it's visible enough when applying the relaxer. The more new growth you see, the less likely you are to overlap previously relaxed hair.

Tips for healthy relaxed hair

🌼 Weekly Wash
Relaxed hair should be washed at least once a week. Invest in a shampoo with hydrating properties to help you clean, maintain and restore hydration. Follow up with a high -quality conditioner.

🌼 Deep Treatments
Hot oil treatments, deep conditioners, and hair masks can add extra hydration. The treatment will help you reinvigorate dry strands and restore balance to the scalp.

🌼Oil Application
Oils like coconut, that contain a trace of protein, work great for relaxed hair, as well as protein-free oils such as argan oil. Oils work double duty, helping to repair the hair and increase resistance from breakage.

🌼 Avoid Heat
Because the process of relaxing hair weakens follicles, you’ll want to avoid using excessive heat as it can easily cause damage. Instead, go for alternative straightening methods such as sleeping with a silk/satin bonnet to flatten hair, or using a wrapping foam/leave-in-conditioner to soften and smooth hair. If you must apply hear, make sure to use a hear protector first.

There are two distinct types of relaxers:
1. Sodium hydroxide
2. Calcium hydroxide
Sodium hydroxide relaxers are known as lye relaxers and calcium hydroxide as no-lye relaxers. The no-lye relaxer is gentle on the scalp but harsh on the hair while the lye relaxer is gentle on the hair but harsh on the scalp. Both can be used on curly, coily or wavy hair. Consult a trained stylist to determine which formula is best for your hair type.
