In 36 States natural hair discrimination is legal
Ending system racism in the form of natural hair discrimination is an issue that needs to be talked about because it’s not just hair.
Before moving to Colorado, I lived in Nebraska and got to be a part of the natural hair advocacy efforts through connecting with who took to task Nebraska senators, and representatives, and the Governor to prohibit such discrimination to occur in Nebraska.
I’m fortunate that Colorado is one of the 14 states that have Crown Act-inspired legislation on their books.
But to the others …. what are you doing?
If you live in a state where the Crown Act is not law, nor do you have Crown Act inspired legislation on the books, contact your State Senator(s) and representatives to get this on their radar ( and if you’re feeling spicy 🌶 tag em in the comments)

As society is becoming more nuanced to the conversations surrounding Natural Hair, there comes the need to remind people how sometimes their “curiosities” even if not intentional are really microaggressions whether they realize it or not.
Microaggressions are statements, actions, or incidents regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group such as a racial or ethnic minority.
As you have seen from my personal experiences, I had a complicated relationship with my natural hair, and that doesn’t just stop at me.

The other day posed a question, on the topic of current hair trends, and whether or not as we descend upon these trends, do we think and question how these “trends” may look for ALL hair types.
This drummed up a lot of thoughts for me because this is just one of the many discrepancies those of us who have tightly coiled hair mean when it comes to lack of representation.
Right now, and for some time there’s been a resurgence of the 90s trendy claw clip - if you remember back in March I did a video with this clip but on straight hair — and that’s the problem. When I looked on for claw clip styles, it’s all the same hair type, none of which are - tightly coiled (trust me i checked).
So you know what I did —- I grabbed those claw clips again because guess what — they can and DO work on tightly coiled curls as well, and another reminder for you all to be your own hair inspiration source if you don’t see it online.

A phrase that I’ve heard around the Natural community that I think exemplifies this very journey that we’ve all been on, or at least hope to be on, is the phrase “ Decolonizing your hair” by _@beautynative. Everything that we have previously thought to be true about our hair is based on, if not heavily influenced by a westernized approach to beauty and I think it’s so important to recognize that.
Having adverse feelings toward your natural hair isn’t easy to unpack in just a day- This is something that can take months, even years to truly address but I wholly believe going natural is a humbling eye-opening process, that everyone should get to experience

Your Braids, Locs, and Afros should not be the reason for you being denied your right to employment.
Hair discrimination is very real, and I appreciate the heavy lifting and have been doing to change the status quo.
