September is Alopecia Awareness Month.

Pediatric Alopecia in children can be caused by a variety of causes:

1. Non-medical - pulling the hair too tight, brushing roughly, newborn hair loss
2. Tinea Capitis - a fungal infection
3. Alopecia Areata - immune system attacking hair follicles
4. Trichotillomania (hair pulling or plucking often cause by anxiety)
5. Telogen effluvium (caused by severe illness or other stressful event

If you notice any of these, contact your health care provider.

Happy Heavenly Birthday my dear sweet Asja McCullough.

Today you would have been 27 years old. I remember when the Dr. said that you were a girl, your name was given that same night. Asja' (life), Alexandria (defender of mankind). I greeted you by your name everyday thereafter until you were born. To say I miss you is an understatement. I miss my best friend, shopping partner, laughing partner, and my just doing nothing partner. I miss the opportunity of seeing you graduate college, living on your own, getting married, and me becoming a Grandmother. But what helps me the most when I'm missing you is that I know you are with God. Eventhough it hurts, this gives me peace and solace, and I know that I will see you again. And when I do, we will never have to part! Love you my sweets. 💙💜

Pressley, a progressive member of Congress, was diagnosed in 2019 with Alopecia Universalis. She discussed the difficulties of her hair loss in a personal January 2020 video, in which she described "waking up every morning to sinkfuls of hair."

She said she didn't have "the luxury of mourning what felt like the loss of a limb" when she lost the last bit of her hair because of pressing business before the House of Representatives: A vote on the impeachment of then-President Donald Trump. She left the House floor and hid in a bathroom stall, feeling "naked, exposed, vulnerable."
"I felt embarrassed, I felt ashamed, I felt betrayed, and then I also felt that I was participating in a cultural betrayal," she said, because of young girls who had looked up to a member of Congress who wore braids.

In recognition of Alopecia Awareness Month,
today we Spotlight our Bold, Bold, and Beautiful Sista Vonn Byers. As you read her amazing story, I hope it gives another person the strength they may need to become a Woman.

My journey began almost 3 years ago when I decided to stop wearing wigs, weaves and take my life back. I went through an embarrassing moment while having a procedure done. The technician told me that I had to remove my wig and cap because the adhesive band would show up on the images. This would be the first time anyone including my family would see me without a wig. I was so embarrassed which caused me to have an anxiety attack and I could not complete the procedure. I went home and cried myself to sleep, when I woke up I decided that I would never cover my head again. I was going to embrace my baldness, I was so tired of hiding who I really was. So I shaved my head.

I have suffered from alopecia for 20 years going through embarrassing moments at the salons with people pointing, laughing,  destroying my confidence, and hurting my feelings. The first person that saw me without my wig and clean shaven head was my son. I didn't say anything to him I just wanted to see his reaction to me without
having hair, but there wasn't any. So finally asked him what did he think? His answer gave me the confidence I needed to continue on this journey. He told me that it didn't matter if I had hair or not he thought I was the most beautiful person he knew. From that day forward I decided to walk in my greatness, my peace, my truth, and to be the proud woman God that  would have me to be.

I am Vonn Byers and I am Bald,, Bold, and Beautiful!
