Why are our perfumes like a bag of Hula Hoops? (and a packet of Custard Creams) 🤔

Here's something interesting that happened to one of my team members a while back! Still relevant so i thought i would share!
she opened up a bag of Aldi Hoops to find a bag of branded Hula Hoops inside!! 😱

This is not uncommon and it's because they are made in the same factory (KP Snacks) and contain exactly the same product INSIDE the bag. The Hula Hoop bag had found it's way into the wrong wrapper during production.

Now the Aldi crisps are not "fakes" - they would only be fakes if Aldi mimicked the Hula Hoop packaging and called them Hula Hoops. ❌

It's also not illegal - in fact it's standard business practice. Let me further explain... 🤓

Another friend of mine, a Production Consultant, did some work recently for McVities. He was standing next to the production line for custard creams and watched all the identical biscuits travel down the line into different bins, where they were wrapped in different wrappers.... wrappers for Sainsbury's, Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Waitrose and, of course, McVities. Different packaging, different resellers, different price point - SAME PRODUCT!

It's the same with our perfumes. The scents are developed by a fragrance house in Germany, who have 80% of the global market share of the perfume industry. They develop and blend the oil blends and then sell them on to whomever wants to buy them. The big brands, Chanel, Gucci, Prada etc... buy the oil blends from the fragrance house. FM also buy the same oil blends from the fragrance house.

The big brands send the oils off to perfume production facilities (who charge a fee) where they are mixed with alcohol and water, bottled, packaged and shipped to wholesalers (who add on a margin for themselves).

FM also send the oils off to their OWN perfume production facility where they are mixed with alcohol and water (smaller amounts I might add!), bottled, packaged and shipped to their OWN warehouses globally (no extra margin added).

Let's go back to the custard creams.... so if you buy your custard creams in Waitrose, there are an awful lot of extra costs that Waitrose add on.... stores in premium areas where land/rates etc... are a higher cost, lots of extra staff dressed in high quality togs, who fan you as you walk around the store, free cups of coffee etc.... (not really free!). The shopping experience is lovely. Those costs are added to the price of the items in the store which is why they cost more.

If you buy your custard creams in Aldi you have to climb to the top of a pallet and unwrap the plastic yourself to reach your custard creams. You then have to queue in an enormous queue for 8 hours because there's only one checkout person on. You then have to try and catch your biscuits as they get flung at you from the till. No toilets. No free coffee. No fanning. The shopping experience is entirely different which is how they keep their prices so low. You don't pay for all the nice extras.

It's the same when you buy perfume. The designer brands have to pay exorbitant rents and staffing costs for concessions in high end department stores, as well as their own stores. They pay A list celebrities to endorse their product in fancy ad campaigns on prime time TV and in glossy magazines. They come in fancy bottles shaped like shoes or gold bullion or human torsos - bottles that nobody sees that then end up in the bin. All of this costs money which is added to the price of the product.

FM do not have these extra costs. They do no advertising. We distributors do that by spreading the word on social media. So instead of Johnny Depp you get me. (Sorry about that!) They ship directly from their own warehouses to us distributors so they have no massive retail costs. They use low cost, plain spray bottles and low cost plain labels, with a number instead of a name.

All this is why our perfumes cost just £16.90💰 from me instead of £100+ from a shop 💸.
