As of 1st of July 2023, AHPRA has reformed the new regulations for non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

Key changes;

◻️Assessment of patient suitability

The cosmetic injector must assess the patient for underlying psychological conditions such as body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), which may make them an unsuitable candidate for the procedure. A BDD screening will be performed during the initial consultation.

◻️Financial arrangements

The medical practitioner must not provide or offer to provide financial inducements (such as a commission) to agents for recruitment of patients. The medical practitioner must not provide or offer to provide free or discounted procedures to prospective patients.

◻️Advertising and marketing

Advertising should not glamorise cosmetic procedures, minimise the complexity of a procedure, overstate results or imply patients can achieve outcomes that are not realistic:

▫️Clear information about risks and recovery must be easily found

▫️Videos and images must be used responsibly and not for entertainment

▫️Must not be used quotes, emojis, music, or casual language (such as 'healthier'
'freshened', 'youthful' or 'sexy' etc.)

▫️Must not share personal testimonials from patients

The new stronger guidelines aim to ensure patients safety.

Let’s talk about skin aging
🔸Skin aging is characterised by some features such as wrinkles, loss of elasticity, uneven tone, skin laxity, pigmentation, dryness and rough-textured appearance.

There are two factors contribute to skin aging.

🔸Intrinsic factors (we cannot control)

✔️Genetics
✔️Hormonal / endocrine system contributions
✔️Medical conditions
✔️.

🔸Extrinsic factors (we can control)

✔️Environmental factors such as air pollutions, sudden weather changes or dry weather
✔️UV exposures
✔️Smoking
✔️Diets
✔️Drinking alcohol
✔️Sleep quality / patterns
✔️Sedentary lifestyles
✔️Stress

🔸Changes in skin with ages

▪️30 to 40 years - the cell turnover slows down, looses tone and develops fine lines, collagen fibres loosen in the dermis (inner layer of skin) and contributes to loss of elasticity

▪️40 to 50 years - the outer layer of skin (stratum corneum) become thicker due to much slower of the cell turnover process, reduces the number of elastic fibres and there’s loss of subcutaneous fat under the skin.

▪️50 to 65 years - collagen synthesis decreases, and the fad pad/layer also diminishes with age. Loss of moisture due to reduction of sebaceous glands function.

🔸Natural skin aging is inevitable, however we can slow down the process by:

▪️Determining extrinsic factors and modifying them - e.g. protecting your skin from the sun, eating healthy and regular exercise.
