Spiral Slicer
Spiralising of vegetables uses a spiral slicer and requires no electricity – great for toning your biceps; actually is does not require all that much muscle. The one I use is called a Spyra Gyra. It comes with its own flat fluted blade and 3 spaghetti blades: angel hair – 0.9mm, linguine – 2.4mm, and fettuccine – 4mm. A spiraliser adds texture to salads, makes coleslaw instantly and gives a professional touch to salads. The blade I use mostly is the 2,4mm blade. For harder vegetables it is best to use either the 2,4mm or 4mm blade. Whilst handling the Spyra Gyra and attaching parts or removing it from the box, be mindful not to cut yourself on the flat fluted blade which is a permanent part of the Spyra Gyra.

Spiraliser
Choosing vegetables to spiralise
Select firm and “fat” vegetables with the girth of the vegetable nice and wide so that they can attach to the pipe blade and the spikes of the rotating disc easily. You will soon figure out what size vegetables are required. Skinny, bendy baby marrows just don’t work!
Sweet potato: I try and find one with the diameter/width of about 7cm (I just found a ruler and measured one). I peel the sweet potato so that the spaghetti is white; unpeeled it looks a little “dirty”.
Butternut: The bulb cannot be spiralised as it is “hollow” – save this part with the skin on to make Butternut Wedges (20 August). The stem is perfect for spiralising – peel it and cut into handle-able sizes – about 7cm in length and width (I just measured – again).
Beetroot: Scrubbed or peeled; cut the ends flat.
Cabbage: To shred a cabbage use the flat blade. It is best to use a baby cabbage and it needs to be “tight” without loose leaves. If the cabbage leaves keep dropping off, it is too loose or too heavy – you may need to support it while turning (you may not have enough hands).
How to spiralise
I cut the vegetables, so that they have 2 flat ends. Push the one end onto the pipe blade, with the pipe blade in the middle, and the other end to be gripped by the spikes of the rotating disc – make sure they bite in really well. Hold tight as indicated and start turning the handle and watch spaghetti spiral out the other side. Very pretty. The best landing strip for your spirals is a glass chopping board or your counter top.
Before serving the spiralised spaghetti, slice through it randomly, so that you avoid having one long continuous strand of spaghetti – one person could end up with the entire butternut on their plate. Or before spiralising, slice through the vegetable on one side only, from outside toward the middle, along its length. That way you will have cut-circle spaghetti strands. It is slightly more difficult to start turning the rotating disc once sliced like this, but once you get turning it works well.

He recently visited to the UK and USA in order to research their Health and Fitness industries, and is currently completing a Sports Nutrition qualification.
