⚪️ Fitzpatrick Skin Types ⚪️

A quick overview of the different Fitzpatrick Skin Types that are often used to assess your risk of skin cancer (all skin types should wear sunscreen) and suitability for different laser treatments. These are just a rough guide and may not be representative of your individual skin/hair/eye color combination.

Please note that ALL skin types can burn.

⚪️ Physical vs Chemical Sunscreens ⚪️

Chemical sunscreens
▪️e.g. Avobenzone, Tinosorb S
▪️Work by absorbing UV radiation
▪️Older chemical filters may be less stable than physical sunscreens, although the newer chemical filters are stable
▪️Often offer more UVA protection than physical sunscreens

Physical Sunscreens
▪️i.e. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide
▪️Work by absorbing UV radiation but also can reflect and disperse some UV radiation
▪️May be better suited to people with very sensitive skin or contact allergies.

Which do you prefer? Chemical or Physical? Or maybe a combination of the two?

⚪️ UVA vs UVB ⚪️ (yes also in winter sunscreen must be applied)

UV radiation can be broken down into UVA (340-400nm), UVB (290-320nm), and UVC (200-290nm).

▪️UVC rays are the shortest and are entirely absorbed by the atmosphere which means they can’t reach your skin in order to damage it. However, UVA and UVB rays can.

UVA rays = The Aging Rays
▪️Are relatively constant all year round
▪️Cause accumulative damage by producing free radicals that damage DNA
▪️Have a longer wavelength and can pe*****te your dermis where they break down collagen and elastin
▪️Cause pigmentation

UVB rays = Burning
▪️Strength fluctuates throughout the day and seasons (e.g. stronger in midday and summer)
▪️Have a shorter wavelength and can only pe*****te your epidermis
▪️Cause sunburn and are highly associated with skin cancer

⚪️ Skin pH ⚪️

Normal skin pH is around 4.7 - 5.9 and slightly acidic. The use of skincare products that have a higher pH (and are thus more alkaline) can damage the skin’s barrier and the functioning of some important pH dependent enzymes.

A more alkaline skin has been linked to acne, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and eczema. In addition, bad bacteria thrive when skin pH is higher. iS CLINICAL’S CLEANSING COMPLEX has a pH of 5.6 which is perfect for removing make-up and pre-treating the skin without stripping it and maintaining a healthy pH balance.

The further away a product’s pH is from normal skin pH, the more you should avoid it. Lemon juice and baking soda should remain in the kitchen and not on your face!

⚪️ AM vs PM Skincare ⚪️ ~ swipe to see Sam’s product recommendations

Your skin goes through a number of natural changes during a 24-hour period. Here are 7 ways to adjust your skincare routine accordingly:

1️⃣Wear sunscreen! It protects your skin from UV radiation which is responsible for up to 90% of skin aging.
2️⃣Use antioxidants alongside sunscreen as they work synergistically with sunscreen to protect your skin against UV radiation. They also protect your skin from the effects of pollution.
3️⃣Use acidic products (e.g. salicylic acid cleanser, ascorbic acid, etc.) in the morning to keep your skin pH at its acidic ideal. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is also an excellent antioxidant.
𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘦: 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘺𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘥 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘯 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘜𝘝 𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 (𝘶𝘯𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘨𝘭𝘺𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘥/𝘈𝘏𝘈𝘴) 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘢 𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘶𝘯𝘴𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘯).
4️⃣Use oil-controlling products in the AM – ingredients like salicylic acid, niacinamide, and green tea can help reduce oil production and help control midday oiliness. The latter two are also antioxidants which means they help with #2 as well!
5️⃣Use DNA-repairing enzymes (e.g. photolyase found in bacteria and plants) to help your skin undo the damage done during the day.
6️⃣Enhance your elevated rate of skin cell renewal by using retinoids (e.g. retinol) at night.
7️⃣Use heavier moisturizers at night to reduce the amount of water lost from your skin overnight. Dry skin may benefit from an occlusive moisturizer to really lock in moisture.

⚪️ Best Protection Boosting Antioxidants ⚪️ ~ swipe for my product recommendations

Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals (unstable molecules that cause damage to DNA and break down collagen) that are produced when your skin is exposed to UV radiation & pollution.

Research suggests that the addition of antioxidants into sunscreens can reduce free radical production by up to 78%.

3 Antioxidants that are particularly good at boosting sun-protection are:

▪️Niacinamide
▪️Vitamin C (especially when combined with vitamin E & ferulic acid)
▪️Green Tea (especially when combined with caffeine)

You can usually find sunscreens that contain these ingredients but it’s usually more effective to combine them separately (e.g. using an antioxidant serum under your sunscreen).

All 3 antioxidants are suitable for all skin types/conditions, but some may offer additional benefits:
▪️Acne - Niacinamide, Green Tea
▪️Hyperpigmentation - Vitamin C, Niacinamide
▪️Rosacea - Green Tea, Niacinamide
▪️Dry Skin - Niacinamide
▪️Oily Skin - Niacinamide, Green Tea
▪️Combination Skin - Niacinamide
▪️Aged - Vitamin C
