One of the best non-chemical ways we have found to reduce damage from snails and slugs is by using ash... so now you have another reason to go clean out that braai place π

Winter in South Africa βοΈπ
Hive checks and maintenance before the cold weather comes πΊπ»
This was taken back in April, when we moved a swarm from a broken down old box into a new one for winter πβοΈYou can see the urgent flow of the bees moving into the box - they know their Queen is in there, and are rushing to join her!

Bee sweets π
Once honey has been drained from the comb, we put the remaining crushed wax out where the bees can access it. They clean off the last drops of honey, and once this is done, we can melt the wax down, strain it, and reshape it into blocks of clean, perfect beeswax ππΊ

We were called out for a swarm removal on a private property in Sardinia Bay this morning ππΊ
We arrived to find the swarm gathered on a fence, and proceeded to set up the catch box nearby. We manged to find the Queen and got her into the box - once you've found her, the battle is halfway won! ππ
Worker bees stand with their butts in the air, fanning their wings, to spread the Queens' pheromone to other workers, which lets them know how to find her (pic 3)
Once the workers have that smell, they follow it into the box (pic 4)
Now we leave them to settle down, and we'll go back this evening to see if they are still there. If they are, we'll relocate them to a safe and bee-friendly site ππΏ

There are many species of Hibiscus found in South Africa πΊ these beautiful flowers originated somewhere in China, and have spread around the world π
Hibiscus attract a variety of birds and insects as pollinators due to their large, brightly coloured petals π¦ππ¦ and the dark centre appearing in some Hibiscus act as a "target" to help pollinators locate the nectar they are searching for.
Bees also enjoy Hibiscus, so if you have these in your garden you're doing it right ππΊπ
