In my early 20s and a uni dropout due to Functional Neurological Disorder.

Functional Neurological Disorder doesn’t care how old you are. One day I woke up and my brain forgot how to control my body. Seizures, paralysis, speech loss. Doctors call it “software not hardware” — my brain looks fine on scans, but the signals are scrambled.

What they don’t tell you is how expensive it is to survive.

Because it was an emergency, my doctor sent me straight to ICU. That decision saved me. But medical aid said “no” because I was on a waiting period. So now I owe Mediclinic R75,000.

I’ve sent appeals. I’ve got lawyers. I’m fighting. But while we fight, the debt is in my name. I’m a student. I don’t have R75k.

I never thought I’d be the person posting this. But FND took my health, and medical aid debt is trying to take my peace.
