Media Statement
May 7, 2026
THE Media Initiative on School Health welcomes the historic passage of the Free Education Bill, which enshrines free education as a fundamental right for all citizens.
This achievement is not just a win for learners today, but also a big step towards making education accessible to all citizens.
Enshrining free education in law demonstrates that the government is forward-looking—concerned not only with the immediate needs of children but also with their long-term welfare and the future of the nation. This move ensures that generations to come will benefit from guaranteed access to education and lays the foundation for a more inclusive and prosperous country.
Removing financial barriers and ensuring that children from rural areas and other marginalised communities can all pursue their dreams without discrimination truly makes our education system a great equaliser.
We further commend the government for such complementary programmes as the school feeding and the school health programmes, which are vital in ensuring that learners not only access education but thrive in healthy and supportive environments.
These interventions have strengthened the free education policy by addressing barriers to learning. improving attendance, and enhancing the overall well-being of pupils.
The Media Initiative on School Health recognises that education, nutrition, and health are inseparable pillars of human development. Integrating these programmes demonstrates the government’s commitment to laying a strong foundation for more educated and more prosperous nation.
As an organization, we stand ready to continue supporting and amplifying these efforts, ensuring that every child enjoys their right to education in a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment.
