I’M READY TO WORK WITH UPND, HH – IRIS

Newly elected Mwandi Independent Member of Parliament Iris Kaingu says she is ready to work with the UPND government and President Hakainde Hichilema following the conclusion of the August 13 general election.

Kaingu, who contested the Mwandi parliamentary seat as an independent candidate, emerged victorious despite facing the UPND’s Sibeso Sefulo. Her victory secured her a place in the National Assembly as one of the independent candidates elected in the 2026 polls.

Her willingness to work with President Hichilema signals a shift from the tensions witnessed during the campaign, when the two publicly differed over her decision to contest as an independent candidate.

Kaingu had resigned from the UPND in June after failing to secure the party’s backing for the Mwandi parliamentary race, choosing instead to contest independently.

She says that with the election now over, her focus is on working with the government to advance development and serve the interests of the people of Mwandi.

The development could pave the way for greater cooperation between independent MPs and the UPND administration in Parliament as the country moves beyond the election period.
