HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN VAGINAL INFECTIONS
Your va**na speaks.
Through discharge, odor, itch, and pain, it tells you when something’s off
But how do you know which infection is behind it?
Let’s break down the most common ones, what causes them, and how to tell them apart
COMMON TYPES OF VAGINAL INFECTIONS
There’re 4 common infections to be aware of:
- Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), which is caused by an overgrowth of bad bacteria
- Yeast infection (Candidiasis), caused by an overgrowth of yeast
- Trichomoniasis, which is a s*xually transmitted parasite
- Urinary tract infection, which is a bacterial infection of the urinary system.
HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THEM
- Bacterial Vaginosis
This is due by an imbalance in the normal va**nal flora, commonly seen in s*xually active women.
Key signs:
- Fishy odor after s*x
- Thin, grey-white discharge
- Burning while urinating
- Pain during s*x
- Urinary tract infection
This is an infection of the urinary tract mostly caused by E.coli.
It affects the urethra, bladder or kidneys and it’s common in women due to shorter urethra.
Key signs:
- Burning during urination
- Intense urge to p*e often
- Lower tummy pain
- Strong urine odor
- Cloudy urine
WHEN DO YOU SEE A DOCTOR?
See a health professional if:
- You notice a strong persistent odor
- You notice an unusual amount or color of discharge
- You experience pelvic pain or painful s*x
- You have frequent infections
- You experience fever, chills or back pain (which might signal a kidney infection)
PLEASE DON’T:
- Self medicate using antibiotics or antifungal without knowing the root cause
- Use antiseptics, alum or bleaching agents in your va**na
- Assume all discharge means you have an infection.
HOW DO YOU PREVENT THESE INFECTIONS?
- Avoid douching: it unbalances your PH
- Wear cotton underwear, change out of it often and don’t stay in damp clothes
- Wipe from front to back
- Urinate immediately after s*x
- Limit sugary foods if you’re prone to yeast infections
- Drink a lot of water
- Use condoms.
Your va**na is not meant to be sterile.
It’s a self cleaning, balanced system that will definitely send signals when something is wrong.
- Learn the signs and don’t ignore them
- Don’t feel ashamed to ask for help
- Act wisely.
