A couple of weeks ago, I had a special moment giving my 7-year-old daughter a much-needed trim. As a parent, I am usually nervous about handling her precious curls myself, but her trust and excitement outweigh any hesitation.

For curly and coily hair enthusiasts, managing single strand knots and split ends is part of the routine. Regular trims are essential for maintaining healthy growth and that coveted shine. To begin, I stretched her hair using my Dyson hair dryer equipped with an afro comb attachment on medium heat. The process was gentle and surprisingly enjoyable for my daughter. After washing and towel-drying with a microfiber towel, I applied a nourishing leave-in conditioner followed by a blend of food-grade coconut and shea butter oil to protect her hair from the heat.

Working in manageable sections, I carefully trimmed away about 1-1.5 cm of tired ends using good quality hair scissors. The result? Instant rejuvenation and added bounce, with the oil blend leaving her curls shiny without any heaviness.

Her excitement over her new school-ready look was palpable. We cherish these moments of transformation. Trims are scheduled every four months, a routine that has proven effective so far.
