Spinal health is crucial because the spine controls the body’s vital functions. It is the spine which provides the structural support to our body and helps us to maintain the upright posture. It protects spinal cord & nerve roots assists us to move and perform our everyday tasks. Without a healthy spine, day-to-day activities like walking, getting up, bending over can become extremely difficult. Further, it also plays a key role in transmitting sensory information like pressure, touch, cold, warmth, pain and sensations to the skin, muscles, joints, and internal organs. Poor spinal health can interrupt sensory responses and disable sensations in certain parts of the body. In later stages, it may hamper motor functions of the nerve causing weakness.

Your spine compresses throughout the day so that you are taller in the morning than in the evening. The reason for this height discrepancy throughout the day is due to the fluid in your spinal discs. The discs absorb fluid when your body is horizontal as you lie down to sleep at night. As you stand and sit throughout the day, the discs expel fluid. The spine compresses as the discs expel fluid, and you get a little bit shorter (1-2cm)! 📏

✔️ Rest feet flat on the ground

✔️ Adjust seat height to keep upper legs at least 90 degrees away from the body. Ideally position hips slightly above knees, if that’s comfortable for you

✔️ Adjust backrest lumbar support of chair to support lower back. Ensure seat isn’t pushing against back of knees

✔️ Pull shoulders back and position earlobes so they are inline with shoulders

✔️ Ensure that lower arms are parallel to floor and wrists are straight while typing and mousing

✔️ Distribute weight evenly on both hips

The abdominal muscles help support the lower back and pelvis. The abdominal muscles surround about 2/3 of the lower part of the body. Strengthening the abdominal muscles will increase spinal stability and reduce the risk of spine injury. Conditioned abdominal muscles will also contribute to more efficient walking. Strong abdominal muscles will fatigue less during prolonged standing or prolonged sitting thereby, protecting the lower back. 🏄‍♀️🧗‍♂️

💥 Just like the skull protects your brain, the spine protects your spinal cord, which is very delicate
💥 The spinal cord carries signals from the brain that tell your body what to do, such as moving your arms or legs

💥 Reflexes (such as pulling your hand away from a hot stove) happen in the spinal cord without the brain being involved
💥 If your spinal cord is damaged, you usually lose the ability to move or feel part of your body

Osteochondrosis refers to a wear-and-tear disease of cartilage and bone that most frequently affects joints that are under a lot of stress.
