A new biodegradable "nanobone" could one day offer an alternative to jawbone grafts.

For decades, repairing large jawbone defects has often required bone grafts harvested from another part of a patient's body. While effective, these procedures can involve additional surgery, discomfort, and longer recovery times.

Researchers from the University of Sydney and the University of Queensland have now developed a biodegradable nanostructured material that activates the body's own bone-repair signals. Rather than simply filling a defect, the material attracts bone-forming cells and promotes natural bone regeneration.

In a preclinical bone model, the material generated approximately 80% more new bone than a control material after eight weeks. Researchers also reported activation of a key bone-repair growth factor at around 10 times the level achieved with conventional methods, suggesting the material may enhance the body's natural healing response.

The technology was initially developed to address jawbone defects associated with cleft lip and palate, where bone grafting is commonly required during childhood or adolescence. Scientists believe the material could one day also be applied to traumatic jaw injuries, tooth-loss–related bone defects, and other reconstructive procedures.

Unlike materials that simply fill a defect, this biodegradable material is designed to be gradually replaced by the body's own tissue as new bone forms. Researchers are also exploring personalized 3D-printed versions that could be tailored to individual patients.

The technology remains preclinical, and further testing is required before human trials can begin. Nevertheless, the findings represent a promising step toward future treatments that help the body rebuild lost bone using its own regenerative mechanisms.
