Normally, ovulation tests that react to luteinizing hormone (LH) in urine are used a few days before the expected ovulation.
Here’s how you can calculate when this applies if you have a regular 28-day cycle:
• Length of the menstrual cycle: 28 days
• Luteal phase (from ovulation to menstruation, usually quite stable): 12–14 days
• Start testing: 3 days before ovulation
This results in the calculation: 28 − 14 − 3 = 11.
In this example, the woman should start using ovulation tests on day 11 of the cycle.
Cycle days are counted starting from the first day of menstruation.
If you have irregular cycles, it is a bit more difficult to calculate when you should use ovulation tests. Cycles are considered irregular if the difference between cycles is more than 7 days and/or if cycles are shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days.
For irregular cycles, it is best to base your calculations on the shortest cycle from the past six months and use its number of days.
For example, if your shortest cycle lasted 21 days and your luteal phase is stable at 14 days, this means: 21 − 14 = 7.
Ovulation would therefore be expected on day 7, and you should start testing three days earlier, on day 4 of the cycle.
Ovulation tests can also help you determine the length of your luteal phase and whether it is longer or shorter than 14 days, which can affect fertility.
You don’t have to plan s*x strictly around ovulation if it is difficult to determine. To increase the chances of conception, it can be helpful to have s*x every 2–3 days throughout the entire cycle.
