Have you ever cried in Pigeon? Why is it such an emotional shape? How is emotion stored in the body? There is no doubt that we store emotion from the past in our bodies. Often from far before we were old enough to have the tools to process it consciously or even remember the initial incident. Think about how many children you see crying with their parents desperately trying to make them stop. How do we stop the crying? We tense up and hold it in. Where does it go? It gets stored somewhere in the body. I can’t give you a map and say, this emotion gets stored here, this emotion here... We all have a unique anatomical and energetic make up. In pigeon one side of the body is experiencing a psoas release, the other a deep opening of the outer hip. This tends to relate to lower chakra stuff. Earth and water. Survival and s*x. Fear and attachment. That’s about the best I can do for you in terms of satisfying the mind and really you don’t need any more than that. The proof is in the practice. What do you feel? Alan Watts said “Your body does not eliminate poisons by knowing their names.” Just like we don’t get to know a person by knowing their name, that can only be done with quality time spent together. Yin Yoga facilitates this healing. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Feeling is healing. For this to happen we need to go beyond the rational mind and develop the witness. In order to do that we need a safe space. Yin Yoga is both the safe space and the tool to uncover the root of tension stored in the fascia of the body. The root of the tension is not the tension itself. It is said that asana clears the past, the breath transforms the present moment and our meditation creates our future. We have all the tools we need, the question is are we brave enough to let go into the fire of transformation? The body is holding tension to keep us safe and the ego loves using its old stories to justify its existence. Every class is an opportunity to face the truth. The body doesn’t lie. The body keeps the score. As teachers we need to take his seriously and realize that people may reexperience their deepest traumas under our guidance.
