This beautiful marble statue was not ‘built ‘ in 1953.

It was carved from a block of white gold (marble) extracted from the quarry in the South Tirol, Italy.

The 7.5-meter-high statue was designed by architect Karl König and created by the sculptor Viktor Tilgner it was erected and unveiled at Albrechtsplatz, Vienna in 1896 just five days after Tilgner died.

Damaged by wartime bombing in 1945 it was restored and placed at its new location in Burggaten on June 5, 1953 that was 71 years ago yesterday.
