Maintenance for Mr M ๐Ÿ’œ

This is what years-in locs look like when you stop fighting the grey and just look after them.

Crown tidy. Lengths left alone. No wax. No โ€œmake them look brand new.โ€

Give it back to yourself.

This chair holds hours on a scalp.

Other people's grief.

Other people's silence.

That is loc work.

It is also output.

If the only care travels one way, the person behind the chair becomes the loc that never gets washed.

Time that is not a booking is still loc work.
The crown you keep forgetting...is yours. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’œ

๐ŸŒฟ Noticing a Shift, And Iโ€™m Here For It ๐Ÿ’œ

Lately Iโ€™ve been seeing something powerful happening in brand awareness campaigns.

More models with textured hair are finally being casted front and centre. Not just the โ€œsafeโ€ waves or the token curlโ€ฆ I mean real texture, coils, kinks, locs, braids, twists, dreadlocks, the full spectrum of what textured hair actually looks like in everyday life.

Brands are finally recognising that, texture isnโ€™t a trend, itโ€™s a reality.

Representation isnโ€™t optional, itโ€™s essential.

Authenticity connects because people want to see themselves.

As someone who works handsโ€‘on with textured hair every day, itโ€™s refreshing to see campaigns embracing the beauty, diversity, and individuality that textured hair brings. This shift matters.

It shapes identity.
It shapes confidence.
It shapes the future of our industry.

And Iโ€™m excited to see where this momentum goes next.๐Ÿ”ฅ

Weekend just gone, the studio was full of hands, hooks and that quiet kind of focus you only get when people are making something thatโ€™s actually theirs.

Dread tails at Dreadlocks Society Highbury, looms on the table, fibres everywhere, beads being picked like treasure.

No rushing. Sit down, choose your colours, wrap what feels right, leave with a piece you made.

Thank you to everyone who came. This is the Society bit.

Next workshop... places stay small on purpose.

Iโ€™ve learnt that business, like dreadlocks, is a long spiritual commitment built on intention, community, resilience, and authentic care, not just transactions or trends.

My goals have always been about treating locs as more than hair. Theyโ€™re a sacred journey of self-expression, patience, nature, spirit, strength, and community. It started with my own love of dreads back in high school, the plunge with an amazing Adelaide loctician, and the deep realisation that so many products out there were missing the intention and values I was experiencing in my own journey.

That pushed me to research, test, and create Australian-made botanical products, free from parabens, sulfates and harsh chemicals, designed to nourish, cleanse, hydrate, stimulate the scalp, support growth and protect colour.

From there the vision grew into a full ecosystem: salon services (installs, maintenance, repairs, treatments, extensions), our beautiful studio space, mobile offerings, community events, a stockist and ambassador program, an artist directory, and educational content. The heart of it has always been building a like-minded community of spiritual beings having a human experience with locs that rock, while giving people premium plant-powered care and a sacred space to be held.

The struggles have been real. Building something from a personal journey into products, services, a studio, certifications and wider reach took deep research, systems, visibility work and constant growth.

Online misrepresentation hit harder than I expected at times, watching false stories circulate that painted a version of me I didnโ€™t recognise. Itโ€™s unsettling when fiction spreads faster than truth. Industry dynamics and competition can create friction when youโ€™re visibly growing a values-driven brand. And learning to take deliberate pauses to rest and recharge has been essential for sustaining it all. These challenges mirror the patience and maintenance required for healthy locs themselves.

The beautiful souls who want to see me succeed have been my greatest gift. Leisa has been the backbone for over six years, dear friend, colleague, collaborator, and someone deeply aligned with the heart of this work. Other artists, stockists and locticians in the wider community have celebrated the milestones and walked alongside. The clients who trust me with their crowns, treating the process as identity, healing and self-expression, form the living heart of Dreadlocks Society. Ambassadors, event participants and the broader loc community who show up with love reinforce that this is so much bigger than one person.

And I thank the ones who tried to tear me down. The gossip, the character questioning, the people who treated growth as competition, they clarified the difference between noise and substance. They showed me the value of staying grounded in real relationships, daily integrity, and the people who actually know how I show up. That contrast sharpened my focus. Energy spent on fiction is energy not spent on the work, the community, or the next step forward. Thanking them is a way of reclaiming my power. Their attempts didnโ€™t stop the studio, the botanicals, the certifications or the community from expanding.

What Iโ€™ve truly learnt is that lasting success in this space comes from aligning products and services with genuine lived values, prioritising community and collaboration over pure competition, protecting my energy against misrepresentation, and treating the business itself as a ritual of care and patience. Quality compounds. The people who walk with me become the real measure. The ones who tried to diminish it simply confirmed why the foundation of intention and solidarity matters so much.

Building something lasting in a niche rooted in identity and spirit requires exactly the same qualities the locs themselves demand: consistency, respect for the process, and trust in the universe while protecting what youโ€™ve grown. Thatโ€™s the body of learning I carry.
