A fossil hidden in plain sight for over a century has finally revealed its true identity. Originally cataloged as an agate in 1883, a 60-million-year-old object in London stunned scientists when modern analysis confirmed it as a dinosaur egg. Measuring around 15 centimeters, its pink-and-white banded interior is a stunning example of nature’s artistry, but it also holds a window into prehistoric life.
This egg belonged to a titanosaur, one of the massive long-necked dinosaurs that roamed India during the Late Cretaceous period. Its fossilization is particularly remarkable: volcanic activity likely covered nests with lava, preserving the eggs within the rock. Over millions of years, silica-rich water permeated the egg, gradually crystallizing and turning it into the agate-like fossil admired today.
The rediscovery demonstrates the hidden treasures that can reside within museum collections. For over 140 years, this egg sat unnoticed, its true significance obscured by its mineralized appearance. Modern paleontologists studying its size, shape, and surface features were able to link it unmistakably to titanosaurs, providing rare evidence of their reproductive biology and nesting behaviour.
This finding not only enriches our understanding of titanosaurs but also highlights how volcanic activity and mineralisation can create extraordinary natural time capsules. Such fossils serve as tangible connections to the distant past, allowing scientists to study ancient life in incredible detail.
Strange Fact: Some fossilized dinosaur eggs can turn into crystals over millions of years, effectively preserving the eggs as sparkling natural sculptures.
Which aroma are you reaching for today?
My go to this week is still my spring aroma paired with brown dravite and honey calcite.
