Age management just got serious
In the 20 years that I have been involved in the Cosmetic Industry, there has been a shift in not only the reasons that women, in particular, seek an age management solution, but in the list of requirements they have in choosing a modality. Today’s middle aged woman does not choose a cosmetic procedure in order to look young enough to ‘hold onto a man’. My clients o

Alpha Arbutin: a smart pigment regulator between treatments

When we treat pigmentation with technologies like BBL HERO, Moxi and Halo Hybrid Fractional Laser, what you use between treatments plays a major role in maintaining results.

Alpha arbutin works by inhibiting tyrosinase, the key enzyme involved in melanin production. By slowing the conversion of tyrosine into melanin, it helps regulate excess pigment formation and keep melanocyte activity more controlled.

This is particularly important between laser and light treatments. While BBL and Halo target existing pigment and stimulate skin renewal, the skin can still continue producing melanin — especially in those prone to melasma, sun damage or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Alpha arbutin helps reduce this ongoing pigment production and supports clearer skin between sessions.

It is also well tolerated and generally non-irritating, making it suitable for consistent long-term use.

For most people, 1–2% alpha arbutin used once or twice daily works well as part of a pigment management routine. As always, consistent broad-spectrum SPF is essential to protect your results.

Because effective pigment control isn’t just about the treatment — it’s about what you do between them.

Azelaic acid helps to improve uneven tone through a few key pathways: it inhibits tyrosinase (a key enzyme involved in melanin production) and helps normalise overactive melanocytes, which are often dysregulated in melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

It’s also anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, which matters because inflammation is one of the strongest triggers for recurrent pigment — especially after breakouts or in redness-prone skin.

And importantly, azelaic acid has keratolytic properties. In simple terms, it helps normalise abnormal keratinisation and gently encourages the shedding of pigmented, uneven surface cells. That’s why it can improve clarity, texture and congestion at the same time.

While azelaic acid is powerful, pigment often needs more than a topical approach.

Pigment is influenced by UV exposure, heat, vascular stimulation and inflammation — so at Saphira Clinic we often combine azelaic acid with targeted in-clinic treatments for better control and longer-term stability:

✨BBL HERO helps address pigment at multiple wavelengths while also reducing redness/vascular activity and calming inflammation — which is key for melasma and rosacea-prone skin. It can also support acne management by reducing inflammatory drive and helping improve overall skin clarity.

✨HALO Hybrid Laser allows us to refine stubborn epidermal pigment and texture through fractional resurfacing, while stimulating deeper renewal — particularly helpful for persistent dyschromia, enlarged pores and acne scarring.

Vitamin C isn’t just a “brightening” ingredient. It actively interferes with melanin synthesis at multiple stages of the pigment pathway.

At a cellular level, UV exposure stimulates tyrosinase — the key enzyme responsible for converting tyrosine (amino acid) into melanin.

It also downregulates tyrosinase activity and reduces oxidative stress within melanocytes — which is critical, because inflammation and free radicals amplify pigment production.

But there’s another layer.

Vitamin C is also essential for healthy collagen production. This matters because pigmentation often sits alongside sun damage and collagen breakdown. By supporting collagen, Vitamin C not only helps regulate pigment but also improves overall skin strength, clarity and resilience.

So what does that mean clinically?

• Brighter overall tone
• Reduced UV-induced pigment stimulation
• Support in treating melasma & PIH
• Improved skin integrity alongside pigment correction

At Saphira Clinic, we use Vitamin C as part of a multi-layered pigment strategy — combining topical melanocyte regulation with in-clinic treatments like BBL HERO and fractional lasers like HALO, Moxi and Clear & Brilliant to address both superficial and deeper pigment reservoirs.

Because pigment is never treated at one level alone.

When collagen contraction and neocollegenesis meet cellular rejuvenation and skin clarity… ✨
This is “The Magic” by Saphira Clinic.

For our beautiful client May, we performed Thermage FLX and BBL HERO as part of her annual “Magic” protocol — a comprehensive, layered approach we designed for long-term skin integrity, not just short-term glow.

Thermage FLX works deep within the dermis to tighten existing collagen and stimulate ongoing remodelling, strengthening the structural framework of the skin. BBL HERO then refines the surface — targeting pigment, vascularity and uneven tone while supporting cellular rejuvenation (let’s hear it for Forever Young! 👏🏻).

Structure + surface.
Prevention + correction.
Immediate tightening + progressive improvement.

We perform “The Magic” for May each year to maintain her results and stay ahead of intrinsic and environmental ageing. It’s about consistency, strategy and respecting the biology of the skin.

Next session, we’ll build on this foundation with another BBL HERO and a tailored skin booster to further enhance hydration, luminosity and dermal quality — because comprehensive treatment planning is where true transformation lives.

That’s the difference. That’s “the Magic”. ✨
