🚨 **THE GOVERNMENT JUST GUTTED HAIRDRESSING APPRENTICESHIPS — AND EXPECTS US TO SMILE ABOUT IT** 🚨🇦🇺✂️
From **1 January 2026**, the Federal Government is **HALVING apprenticeship support** and calling it “reform”.
Let’s call it what it is.
🔻 Apprentice support: **$5,000 ➝ $2,500**
🔻 Employer hiring incentive: **$5,000 ➝ $2,500**
Same expectations.
Same skills shortage.
**Half the support.**
So the message to salons is simple:
> *“Train the next generation — just don’t expect us to help pay for it.”*
⚠️ **Here’s the part Canberra doesn’t understand (or doesn’t care about):**
Hairdressing apprentices:
• are not productive for years
• require constant supervision
• need education, tools, insurance, wages
• cost salons tens of thousands to train properly
This industry runs on **small business**, not corporations with HR departments and government lobbyists.
Cut the incentives and you don’t “save money”.
You **kill apprenticeships**.

This decision is lazy, short-sighted, and insulting to every salon owner who’s ever invested time, money, and patience into training someone from scratch.
You cannot:
❌ demand more apprentices
❌ talk about skills shortages
❌ praise “essential workers”
❌ AND slash the support that keeps training alive
That’s not leadership.
That’s cost-shifting dressed up as policy.

• Fewer apprentices hired
• More burnout for existing staff
• Higher prices for clients
• Bigger skills shortages
• Young people locked out of trades
