So why do I have this headache right now? At 3,400m my body has triggered something called the Hypoxic Ventilatory Response — chemoreceptors in my carotid artery have detected the drop in oxygen and signalled my brain to breathe faster. But breathing faster has dropped my CO2 too low, and that’s actually what’s causing the headache, dizziness and brain fog — not just the lack of oxygen itself. On top of that, my blood’s ability to release oxygen to my muscles has shifted too, something known as the Bohr Effect. The fix? Slowing my breath right down. Nasal breathing at altitude releases nitric oxide from the sinuses, which dilates blood vessels and helps every molecule of oxygen reach my tissues more effectively. My body is already fighting for me. Breathwork just gives it the tools to win.
