Day after New Year’s. Hungover. Running on vibes and questionable life choices. 🍸😂

Stepping through a random door in the alley behind The Wickham felt like unlocking a secret level of Brisbane.

Down a hallway… and then BAM.

You step into a dark, moody space where the chandeliers glow, the vibe is immaculate, and you instantly forget you’re standing in the middle of Fortitude Valley.

Hôntô puts a modern spin on Japanese cuisine, taking classic dishes and giving them seasonal twists using incredible local produce. Every plate that hit the table looked like a work of art, but tasted even better.

Now, Rod is the Japanese food fanatic in this relationship, but even I was blown away. Every dish was thoughtful, packed with flavour and had me eyeing off the next plate before I’d finished the first.

The standout? The Pork Katsu Sando with cabbage on shokupan. I’d happily fight someone for the last bite. 🤤

Safe to say, Hôntô cured the hangover better than a greasy Macca’s run ever could. We barely scratched the menu, so we’ll definitely be back to eat our way through the rest of it.

Back at one of our absolute Brisbane favourites…

If you haven’t been to Azteca yet, their menu is a celebration of culinary innovation, blending the rich and diverse flavours of Latin American and Asian cuisines. It’s such a unique combination, and somehow every single dish just works.

We kicked things off with cocktails (because… priorities 🤭), then out came the tiniest little tacos. Don’t let their size fool you because they PACK a punch. Every one was delicious, but the mushroom taco absolutely stole the show for us.

Then came the main event… the COSTILLAS A LA TOTEC. Picture this: a 24-hour slow-cooked short rib, smothered in an 8-hour house-made BBQ sauce, arriving at the table literally steaming away. It was dinner and a show. 🤩
The beef was ridiculously tender and that BBQ sauce? I could’ve happily had another bowl of it. My only complaint… I wanted more. 🤭

The duck was cooked beautifully too. So delicate, full of flavour, and paired with a simple side salad that was honestly so fresh and delicious. I am a sucker for a good salad!

And can we talk about the YUQUITAS? These fried cassava chips are my non-negotiable order every single visit. Super crunchy, insanely moreish, and that slightly spicy aji amarillo dipping sauce is chef’s kiss. 👌

We’ve been here heaps now and Azteca just doesn’t miss. The food, the cocktails, the service and the vibe are spot on every single time, which is exactly why we keep coming back.
