Local legends: Boxing kangaroos 🦘🥊
If you've ever been to a sporting match against Australia, you've probably seen a green and gold flag featuring our national emblem - the kangaroo - donning a set of red boxing gloves. But where did this legend come from?
It's based on the defense mechanisms these animals can display, whereby they rear up on their hind legs and tail and use their claws to spar with one another. Sometimes, it's just playing around. Other times, the roos mean business though - kicking and slashing at their rivals.
The phenomenon is so well known that it's become prominent in pop culture - featuring in hand drawn cartoons from as early as 1891, silent films from 1895, and even being trademarked by the Australian Olympic Committee.
The South West proudly waves the flag (pun intended) for these interactions, with wild kangaroos often getting into scuffles for visitors to see. Your best bet is usually around dusk, perhaps Mount Trio Bushcamp in the Great Southern, where this photo was shot.
If you spot kangaroos during your travels, please remember to respect them and give them space. They are wild animals and can be unpredictable, so are best viewed from a distance.

With over a 1000km of coastline, ancient Karri forests, and snow-capped mountains (sometimes 🤞), Australia's South West is what winter was made for. 🌊🍃🏔️
The off peak season here is when dappled summer sunlight gives way to darkened skies and forest floors overflowing with moss. The Walpole-Nornalup inlet fills to the brim, creating the perfect conditions for kayaking. And rainbows form in the drizzles beside bubblegum coloured pink lakes.
Winter is about walks taken "before the weather turns", and rugging up by the fire when you return with muddy boots anyway.

The Great Southern is turning gold again 💛
Canola season is underway around Discover Great Southern, turning the luscious green fields into swathes of yellow. An annual rite of passage for the region, it usually begins in July, peaking in mid-August to September. The rainbows however, are an unplanned bonus! 🌈
Please remember: Canola fields are working farms and not photo sets. Stay outside fences and never enter private property. Walking among them is a biosecurity threat. When pulling over for photos, only do so where it is safe and you are able to maintain awareness of your surroundings and the road.

Winter settles gently over Nannup. Paddocks deepen to green, forests cling to morning mists, and wildlife becomes courageous, grazing openly on rich soils and wet grass.
From 7–16 August, the Nannup Flower and Garden Festival fills local gardens, streets, and venues with blooms, workshops, markets, and the sort of people who know exactly how to bring a dormant rose bush back to life.
A little further out, Tank 7 trades neat flowerbeds for forest trails, berms, and jumps. The mountain bike network runs through pine country just outside the town, with options for casual laps, a simple stroll, or something more committed.
Then there are the farmstays. Places like Chestnut Brae Farm Stay and Cambray Cottages, who offer slow mornings, muddy boots, and close encounters with cute animals.
Ride. Wander. Stay the night.
Nannup is good at making even a few activities feel like a full weekend.

Turns out "look a little closer" 👀 isn't just good life advice.
Most people come to Smiths Beach for the surf, the sunsets, or a walk along the Cape to Cape. 🏄🌅🥾 But if you happen to be there as the day winds down, you might notice something extraordinary happening in the dunes.
Male Blue-banded bees gathering together for the night, each one gripping a tiny stem with its mandibles until morning. It's one of those small moments that reminds you just how much life is happening around us when we slow down enough to notice.
The best part? It isn't tucked away behind a fence. It's part of a coastline you can experience for yourself. Stay a few nights at the nearby Smiths Beach Resort, wander this stretch of shoreline on a guided walk with Cape2Camp or Off The Beaten Track WA, and spend time exploring one of the South West's most remarkable beaches.
Because sometimes the best stories aren't the ones you set out for. They're the ones you almost walked past. 🐝

🥾🍃 Some paths are easy. And some are an uphill hike through the bush, quick scramble across granite boulders, and then a vertical ladder ascent.
At the Granite Skywalk, nestled in the ancient breathing forests of the Porongurups, a 45-minute drive from Albany, the path is built for adventurers. The ones who chase a spectacular view. Or the kind of friend prone to saying 'we're almost there' when there's still 2km to go.
From silent steps through woods as native birds whistle among the branches, to timberline views backed by golden sunsets. If you're after a hike you'll remember, this is the one.

This iconic tower, which earned its nickname from locals due to its uncanny appearance to an open container of dairy, dominates the City of Bunbury skyline. But on some winters days, it's the fairy-floss colours of dusk that really steal the show.
The peaceful marina nearby is the perfect spot for an afternoon stroll, taking in the glassy water of Jetty Baths, stopping by Vat 2 for a cocktail, or indulging in a sweet treat from Morris Lane Taffys.
A 2 hour drive from Perth's (Boorloo) city centre. Don't forget to stop by the nearby Koombana bay in the morning to spot dolphins, or hop aboard the Dolly Dolphinmobile. to tour the area and learn more about Bunbury's curious and quirky history.
