🐝 What a wonderful day of learning! 🐝
Today we welcomed Hayley from Peek A Boo Honey, who brought along her amazing bees for a hands-on learning experience.
We discovered the important roles of the queen bee and the worker bees, and learnt just how vital bees are for our environment. The children had the opportunity to explore real beekeeping equipment, feel beeswax, listen to the fascinating sounds of the bees, and finish the experience by tasting the yummiest honey! 🍯
It was a fun, engaging, and memorable experience that sparked lots of curiosity and appreciation for these incredible little pollinators.

This week has been the most disheartening in my beekeeping journey this far. Varroa mite has hit my area. We knew it was coming, we know it’s not going anywhere. Suddenly my “side-gig hobby turned small business” has become a huge job. Managing, maintaining, treating hives. Last weekend we discovered a hive of mine had varroa mite. Numbers were small but it was present nonetheless. Today we found all hives where that one is kept has the mite. It is a pest I had never heard of or needed to worry about a few years ago. Now it’s here and it’s absolutely decimating hives. Beekeepers are losing hives at a rapid rate. Treatments can be expensive. The thought that my hives could be gone devastates me. So much time, effort and money invested in something I am so passionate about could be gone in a moment. Try as I might to learn more and more about this pest and how to manage it I feel so overwhelmed and information overload. What’s right? What’s not right? How can we do better? So many questions. So many differing answers. At the end of the day I can only do my best. My heart is breaking for the bees and the beekeepers who are losing their colonies. If you have bees please start testing and treating. Please do your due diligence to try and at least keep the mites in low numbers. It’s an uncertain time for beekeepers, and please, think of the poor bees. We love them and we need them. 🐝💛🍯
This is what we’re dealing with currently. It’s a scary and unknown time for beekeepers.

This week has been crazy with 11 visits to 11 different centres to celebrate World Bee Day! Lots of curious questions and very interested little people wanting to know all about bees. The questions I get asked the most? Where is the queen? Is there a king? I love helping shape these little minds and teach them the importance of bees. If these children walk away from my visit with one piece of information that they didn’t have before I am thrilled and consider my job done. I love it when I see a child after and their parent tells me how excited they were after my visit and the interesting facts they come home with. That makes it all worth while. I want to thank all the educators who reach out to me and invite me to their workplaces. Your support doesn’t go unappreciated. ❤️🐝

Another fabulous visit to another fabulous centre! Thanks for having me! World Bee Day is a busy time and I’m loving every opportunity to speak to children and their educators about the importance of bees in our environment. 🐝
