What is skin needling, you might wonder?

As we get older, the cycle of new skin growth slows, and less collagen and elastin are produced by our cells. This results in fine lines, wrinkles, and dehydrated, pigmented skin. Applying creams and serums moisturises only the outer, dead layer of the skin, and no pe*******on to the living part of the skin takes place.

Microneedling can change that.

The small needles create microchannels, which allows a deeper pe*******on of serums like hyaloronic acid or peptide serums. The microchannels also trigger the body's natural healing process to create the appearance of fresher, newer looking skin. Collagen production is accelerated along with cellular turnover, and you can see results quite fast. However, the best results are seen around 4 weeks.

Microneedling is a 'maintenance' treatment, and it is recommended to incorporate this into your ongoing skin care plan. You can have the treatment ever 4-6 weeks, which gives your skin time to breathe and settle down. Treatments too often can cause broken capillaries and predispose skin to a waxy look.

From the 1.July AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulaton Agency) is introducing changes to the cosmetic industry affecting the non-surgical industry as well. Those changes have been carefully thought out to protect patients.

Below is a snippet of the main changes that are affecting patients and practitioners

1) The informed consent process will be more comprehensive and will include details of your GP as well as treatment cost discussions.
I am all about informed consent at European Cosmetic Therapies, meaning that patients fully understand the treatment they receive, the benefits, risks, and potential complications and the cost this treatment will involve. This is an imperative part of patient safety.

2) We are required to assess patients' suitability for procedures such as anti-wrinkle and dermal fillers. This includes discussing patient's motivations. This can potentially mean that we are unable to offer treatment altogether.

3) Improved documentation and post care instructions for patients. As well as improved protocols for complication and emergency management. Patients will receive information about what medication they received at the treatment.

4) Stricter advertising rules. A separate consent for patient photographs and videos will be required prior to using any patient related material for advertising purposes. Patients can withdraw consent at any time, and practitioners are obliged to remove any photos/videos from their social media.

5) Cosmetic nurses need to organise coverage when on leave.

6) Age restrictions apply, although this should be nothing new. Patients under 18 are not able to receive anti-wrinkle or dermal fillers or any other Scheduled 4 medications at a non-surgical cosmetic clinic.

7) Clinic rooms and facilities need to comply with relevant legislation, regulations, and standards for the industry.

The new regulations are accessible for everyone who wants to make themselves familiar with it.
