Unofficial: Lune

Taking a breath 🌱 sometimes I long for 6 more hours in a day so I can do it all at the same time…but then I remind myself how wrong that is. I should be using the 24 hours thoughtfully, balanced and at a pace that is sustainable and enjoyable. I want to give Lune all the love that it deserves so for a short while, I need to prioritise other aspects calling my attention. Lune will return in time, refreshed and renewed 🌱🤍 much love, Hannah xx

A new focus 🤍 I want to post things that I personally would enjoy reading. For the next little bit, I am going to post interesting psychological studies through out history. Perhaps I will return to quotes and biographies but I hope you enjoy this next series. To start, the “Class Divided” experiment, info by the Online Psychology Degree.

Yoko Ono, born 1933, is a Japanese multimedia artist, singer, and peace activist.
Ono grew up in Tokyo and moved to NYC in 1953 with her family. She became involved with NYC’s downtown artists scene in the early 1960s.
In 1962, Ono married jazz musician, Anthony Cox and shortly after gave birth to their daughter, Kyoko. The marriage quickly fell apart, but the couple continued working together for the sake of their joint careers.

Yoko first met John Lennon of The Beatles, in 1966, at the Indica Gallery in London, where she was preparing her conceptual art exhibit. One piece, had a ladder painted white with a magnifying glass at the top. When Lennon climbed the ladder, he looked through the magnifying glass & was able to read the word YES which was written in miniature.

Lennon was also intrigued by Ono's Hammer a Nail where viewers were invited to hammer a nail into a wooden board painted white. Although the exhibition had not yet opened, Lennon wanted to hammer a nail into the clean board, but Ono stopped him. A friend interrupted her and said, "Don't you know who this is? He's a millionaire! He might buy it." Ono feigned not knowing of the Beatles, but relented on the condition that Lennon pay her 5 shillings, to which Lennon replied, "I'll give you an imaginary 5 shillings & hammer an imaginary nail in.”

In 1969 Lennon and Ono married married, using their honeymoon as a stage for public protests against the Vietnam War. During a 1971 custody battle, Cox disappeared with their 8-year-old daughter. He won custody after successfully claiming that Ono was an unfit mother due to her drug use. Cox then raised Kyoto in a Christian cult for many years. Ono would not see Kyoko again until 1998.

Ono and Lennon remained married until he was murdered in front of the couple's apartment building, the Dakota, in 1980.

Ono began a career in pop music in 1969, forming the Plastic Ono Band & producing a number of avant-garde music albums.

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, born 1884, was an American political figure, and activist and was the first lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945, during her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt's four terms in office.

Roosevelt was a member of the prominent American Roosevelt family and a niece of President Theodore Roosevelt. Her mother and 4 year old brother died within months of each other from diphtheria when Eleanor was 9 years old. Her father, an alcoholic confined to a sanitarium, died the following year, after jumping from a window during a fit of delirium tremens. Roosevelt's childhood losses left her prone to depression throughout her life. She married her fifth cousin once removed, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in 1905. The Roosevelts' marriage was complicated from the beginning by Franklin's controlling mother and after Eleanor discovered her husband's affair with Lucy Mercer in 1918, she resolved to seek fulfillment in leading a public life of her own. She persuaded Franklin to stay in politics after he was stricken with a paralytic illness in 1921, which cost him the normal use of his legs, and began giving speeches and appearing at campaign events in his place.

Though widely respected in her later years, Roosevelt was a controversial first lady at the time for her outspokenness, particularly on civil rights for African-Americans. She was the first presidential spouse to hold regular press conferences, write a daily newspaper column, write a monthly magazine column, host a weekly radio show, and speak at a national party convention. On a few occasions, she publicly disagreed with her husband's policies.

Following her husband's death in 1945, Roosevelt remained active in politics for the remaining 17 years of her life. At age 78, Eleanor died of cardiac failure at her Manhattan home. By the time of her death, Roosevelt was regarded as one of the most esteemed women in the world.

- Sessie Hayakawa

Sessue Hayakawa was a Japanese actor during the silent film era of the 1910s and early 1920s. Hayakawa was the first actor of Asian descent to achieve stardom as a leading man in the United States and Europe. His "broodingly handsome" good looks and typecasting as a sexually dominant villain made him a heartthrob among American women during a time of racial discrimination.

After withdrawing from the Japanese naval academy and attempting su***de at 18, Hayakawa attended the University of Chicago, where he studied political economics in accordance with his wealthy parents' wish that he become a banker. Upon graduating, he traveled to Los Angeles in order to board a scheduled ship back to Japan, but decided to try out acting in Little Tokyo. There, Hayakawa impressed Hollywood figures and was signed on to star in The Typhoon (1914). He made his breakthrough in The Cheat (1915), and thereafter became famous for his roles as a forbidden lover.

Throughout Hayakawa's career, many segments of American society were filled with feelings of anti-Japanese sentiment, partly from nationalism rising from World War I and World War II. Hayakawa was constantly typecast as a villain or forbidden lover and was unable to play parts that would be given to white actors such as Douglas Fairbanks. Hayakawa stated, "Such roles [in The Wrath of the Gods, The Typhoon, and The Cheat] are not true to our Japanese nature... They are false and give people a wrong idea of us. I wish to make a characterization which shall reveal us as we really are." In 1949, he lamented, "My one ambition is to play a hero”.
Because of rising anti-Japanese sentiment and business difficulties, Hayakawa left Hollywood in 1922 and performed on Broadway and in Japan and Europe for many years before making his Hollywood comeback in Daughter of the Dragon (1931) and Colonel Saito in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), for which he earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
