You know that sound.

The technical term behind it is joint cavitation.
Research using real-time MRI has shown that when joint surfaces separate rapidly, a cavity can form within the synovial fluid โ€” a process associated with the familiar cracking sound.
It's known as tribonucleation, which sounds considerably more dramatic than โ€œthat crackโ€.

This is James, one of our remedial massage therapists, doing what youโ€™ll often find him doing in the treatment room.

James has more than 6 years of clinical experience and takes a hands-on, individual approach to his sessions. Depending on the person, his treatments may include techniques such as deep tissue massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy and cupping.

Outside of the treatment itself, heโ€™s also big on helping people feel more confident with movement and getting back to the things that matter to them.

Movement doesnโ€™t always look the same from person to person.
Hereโ€™s a little look inside Retrain with Nat, guiding a patient through different movements during a session.
What happens in a session can vary depending on the person, what theyโ€™re working towards, and whatโ€™s appropriate for them โ€” which is why you might see movements that look a little different from what youโ€™d expect.

Losing track of time in the water is usually a sign it was a pretty good morning.

But the waves you caught are only part of the session โ€” thereโ€™s plenty of paddling and repeated movement happening in between.

If surfing is part of your week, itโ€™s worth factoring the whole session into the rest of your day too.

Monday desk check: when was the last time you actually got up?

No complicated routine. Just a good excuse to move for a minute.

Osteo, physio or remedial massage?

If you're not quite sure which appointment makes sense, you don't need to have the answer before getting in touch.

Tell us a little about what's been going on and we can help point you towards the most suitable place to start.

Feeling better is one thing. Feeling ready to get back to everything you were doing before can be another.

Exercise rehab can help build that bridge โ€” whether you're working towards training again, getting back to sport, or simply feeling more capable with everyday movement.

The starting point won't look the same for everyone, and that's kind of the point.

A few false starts, a few laughsโ€ฆ then over to Nat

A little behind the scenes at Retrain Health, with Nat explaining a piece of equipment we use in the treatment room.

A little look at what happens in the treatment room
Here, Nat is guiding his patient through different movements and observing how he moves as part of the assessment.

Every assessment can look a little different depending on the person and what brings them in.

What is an osteopath actually looking at when they ask you to move?

Sometimes, simple movements can form part of an osteopathy assessment โ€” things like bending, turning or moving in different directions.
Itโ€™s one way your practitioner may gather information about how youโ€™re moving alongside the conversation about whatโ€™s been going on.

At Retrain Health, our osteopaths work with people in Byron Bay across a range of musculoskeletal concerns.

Curious about what happens during an osteopathy appointment? Feel free to get in touch.
